Mallett enrolls at Arkansas
On a day when Arkansas junior running backs Felix Jones and Darren McFadden announced they are turning pro, former Michigan quarterback Ryan Mallett enrolled at Arkansas, according to Rivals.com.
This is a big coup for the Razorbacks, who are landing a five-star player with one year of college experience under his belt. Mallett, a 6-7, 252-pound pocket passer, will be eligible to play in 2009.

Welcome home Ryan! I think you will be very happy at Arkansas under Coach Petrino. Hog Fans get EXCITED!!
GO HOGS!
Outstanding. This dude has loads of potential and could be a major success in Petrino’s offensive scheme, who seems to share Mack Brown’s philosophy of recruiting the very best talent and letting the kids compete. The losers can either ride the pine and wait their turn or transfer. GO HOGS!
Wow! What a wonderful problem! To go from trying to find a decent quarterback to have three (possibly four)committments from quarterbacks with outstanding potential! The Razorbacks could use more problems like this!
Expanding on wholehog’s last post, I agree with the sentiments on the great qb situation but does anyone know what the running back, fullback and WR positions will bring into the Spring drills? I know that Michael Smith will get his chances but I’m unsure of anyone else in these critical skill positions??
In response to ohiohawg about the running backs I think the Hogs got a back from the same high school in Tulsa that produced Felix Jones he was red shirt lhis pass season and If I hear it right he is supposed to be faster and larger that Felix,I believe this is right
There is a freshman that was red-shirted this year from texas that was recruited to the Air Force Academy to play option QB but found it was’nt for him and arrived at U of A after two-a-days. He is 6′0 220 and has high 4.4 speed and runs like LSU’s Hester but with tailback moves. He is a RB now. Just wait till spring ball! He was a Texas 4A district MVP in football , and was a National and International olympic weightlifing champion on Team USA. He will be a force next year.
Rivals.com huh? You could almost insert espn.com or foxsports.com. I’d say until someone actually reports it (and not from Little Rock) wait to be sure folks. Remember what espn.com said about Les Myles taking the Michigan job just before the SEC Championship game and what a stir that caused.
uhh i thought it was a rule that if your head coach left your school then u could transfer anywhere you wanted without being penalized……oh and a friend of mine who is an RA in the Quad (the athletic dorms on campus) said that she saw him checking in today……
In response to cbvenabl, there is no rule that players can transfer unpenalized if head coach leaves. There have been situations where decision to end or suspend a program (ie SMU back in 80’s) where players could probably transfer and maintain eligibility, but not due to a coaching change.
Response to ohiohawg, on WR/RB/FB positions for spring: RB looks to be Michael Smith as lead. He should be very capable as he has experience, has gotten past injuries he had early on, and was considered an equal talent to Jones and McFadden as true Freshmen before he tore a hamstring in fall 05. His size keeps him from being same type of pro prospect as Jones/DMac, but very fast and maybe better fit for Petrino’s offense out of the backfield. Profiles like former OU runningback Quinton Griffen. Brandon Barnett backs him up, and has experience at JC level as 1,000 yrd rusher, excellent speed and more size than Smith, so nice compliment. Very strong and fast, and both will be juniors.
FB is empty after losing Hillis and F. Jackson. Some walk-ins are next on depth chart, but I expect to see Ben Cleveland (if healthy enough) and David Williams get reps here, as they have hands and athleticism to play that spot, and have improved their blocking, though Petrino uses FB differently than Lee did last year. Expect incoming FB Shuler to get serious look come Fall if he stays committed. WR has solid but unspectacular returnees. Crawford has most big-play potential, but lacks consistency. Has best size/speed combo. Crosby Tuck offers best hands and route running, and should give reliable option coming back from broken arm as medical rs frosh. Lucas Miller lacks deep speed, but has solid hands and good size. Fish and Salters offer depth, but have been inconsistent. Dark horse is Marques Wade, who had initial flashes in past, but has not won much time. Has good size/speed combo. Also expect recruits like Cruz Williams and Jarious Wright to provide big talent upgrade, assuming they stay commited.
WOOOOOO PIIIIIG SOOOOIE!!!!!!! Man, can you imaging what WR recruits were gonna get because we getting names like Petrino, Mallet, Johnson, and Williams. Call me crazy, but i find my self asking if its August 30 yet.
Rainer - Is this kid actually enrolled? I have seen some conflicting reports.
Thanks mmachog and texasxhogfan for the insight on next’s years skill position prospects!
The running back from Tulsa who rivaled Felix’ RB stats at Tulsa BTW high is Michael Harris, currently, I believe, at Ark. Baptist in LR. He was working for his eligibility to step up to the next level. One heck of a back to add to these good recruits.
Brandon Barnett will definatly challenge for the lead role at RB. Him and D/Mac were seniors in high school the same year and both played in the all-star game and Barnett was the MVP. They just got another commitment from a kid from Texarkana and his name is Dennis Johnson. Remember that name boys, this kid ia AWESOME!!!!
dwp — his name is now in the UA student directory. So, yes, it appears he is.
many thanks, rainer. very happy to hear the kid is enrolled. good things will come. - david
I’ve watched Dennis Johnson play many times this last year in Texarkana and he really is amazing. He also returned punts and against one of the Little Rock teams he returned three for touchdowns in one night, but one of them I think was called back. This guy will definitely help the U of A.
This is an important weekend coming up. The Hogs will host Aundre Dean, a four-star running back out of Katy, TX. Scouts.com has him listed as the #6 RB in the country, well ahead of De’Anthony Curtis — although Rivals.com has Curtis ahead of Dean. If we could land him, Curtis, and Dennis Johnson, we would be set for the future at the RB position. We lost the other RB from San Antonio, but it may be because Coach Petrino wasn’t very impressed with him.
I’m still waiting for this surge of WRs to knock down our doors. We need to see an official statement from Mallett (and his Dad) so the top WRs will know for sure they’ll have one of the best QBs in CFB to throw the ball to them.
Glad to see its comfirmed in the directory that Mallett is listed.
