Allen to be retained by Petrino

It appears new Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino will retain Arkansas secondary coach Bobby Allen for his 2008 Razorbacks coaching staff.

Sources told the Northwest Arkansas TimesTerry Wood that Allen, who was a member of Houston Nutt’s Arkansas staff for 10 seasons, wanted to remain in Fayetteville.

He has four children in the Fayetteville school system, including Christian, a third baseman for Fayetteville High and Brandon, a Woodland Junior High quarterback, who is expected to vie for the starting job with the Bulldogs as a sophomore next August.
Under Nutt, Allen has coached the defensive line, linebackers and the secondary at Arkansas.

He has concentrated on the secondary the last five seasons. It’s uncertain what position Allen will coach for Petrino. Allen is known as an excellent recruiter, working in the Dallas and Houston areas.

Petrino said he expects to announce his completed staff on Jan. 3 or sometime shortly there after. Petrino has already hired his brother, Paul, as offensive coordinator, and Tim Horton to his staff. Horton is also a holdover from Nutt’s staff after replacing Danny Nutt as running backs coach in July. It has not been announced what position Horton will coach on Petrino’s staff.

The Razorbacks report to Dallas on Wednesday and begin practices Thursday for their Jan. 1 Cotton Bowl matchup with No. 6 Missouri.

  1. Good news here, hogville. Allen is strong in Texas with recruiting and should help solidify the incoming class. Rainer, what are the chances of Herring staying on - or is the A&M gig really a done deal?

  2. I love the word “sources.” “Sources” say Tuberville, Bowden, Grobe will be the next coach at…say Myles will be the next coach at…Herring will be the next defensive coordinator at… It is amusing to see sports journalists substitute the word “sources” for the words “we’re guessing that…” Here’s my vote for the next person on Petrino’s staff: “Ken Hatfield to be chosen as Bobby Petrino’s Special Teams Coach.”

  3. Next vote: “Bob Sanders to be named Hogs Defensive Coordinator”. Bob is currently Defensive Coordinator of the Green Bay Packers. Formally for eleven years (which included SEC Championships and a National Title in 1995), Bob was on Steve Spurrier’s defensive coaching staff of the Florida Gators. Say what you want about Petrino now blackballed by the NFL. What a coup that would be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Next vote: “Anthony Lucas to be named Hogs Receivers Coach.” Lets face it, this guy was a standout in the SEC and Stoerner’s favorite target. Like Pierre Brown, Anthony was the victim of some hard luck in the NFL. But, I think the experience would prove him invaluable.

  5. Ok, I’m on a roll. “Steve Atwater to be named Hogs Secondary Coach.” Need I remind everyone what this guy did in the Hogs defense and later as a Denver Bronco? Future NFL Hall fo Famer is the perfect choice for Petrino.

  6. We do indeed.

  7. Hope those are just ‘tongue in cheek’ comments about Lucas and Atwater. Just because an athlete plays the game well does not mean he can relate to and coach others well. There are many proven coaches who never got off the bench.
It will be very interesting to watch Petrino fill out this
staff. I will be really surprised if he keeps Reggie Herring. But, I have already been surprised that he has
kept any of Houston’s staff. I figured that White and Long would tell him to make a clean break and strike all of the former staff’s names from the records.
With Coach Broyles leaving White and Long can roll their own now. They have already tried to alienate Jerry Jones and some more of the Broyles faithful. Its going to be a different ball game on ‘The Hill’ and I don’t think its going to be one that many people want to watch.
