Petrino to Arkansas
Maybe this one will stick. A news conference will be held at the Broyles Complex at 10:30 p.m., when a major announcement regarding Arkansas’ football program will be made.
ESPN is reporting that Atlanta Falcons coach Bobby Petrino is close to reaching an agreement to become the Razorbacks’ next football coach. The Falcons just confirmed the report to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and said that Petrino has resigned. The NFL’s official Web site is also reporting the same information.
This would be a major coup for Arkansas, which seemed to have reached crisis state in their search for Houston Nutt’s replacement.
Petrino, 46, left the college ranks for the pros after four seasons at Louisville. His record with the Cardinals was 41-9. The Falcons are currently 3-10 after suffering through the Michael Vick dog-fighting episode that landed Atlanta’s franchise player in federal prison for 23 months.

While I’m obviously for hiring Malzahn, Petrino sounds like a great coach (41-9 as HC in NCAA is awesome!!!).
If it turns out to be true, GO HOGS! (And also, to Bobby: I heard there’s a great OC at Tulsa you should consider!)
What a pleasant surprise. If true, EXCELLENT. GO HOGS!!
Finally some sense to all this! Razorback fans, I think we can give ourselves a big pat on the back for this!!! Great Hire, lets all get together behind him!.
GO HOGS!
This dude will get it done. Razorback fooball is on the rise. Petrino is a wizard and if he can build a national power at Louisville, he most certainly can do the same thing at Arkansas.
Finally, some good news. UNbelievable. GO HOGS!
Great Hire! Petrino will out coach Nutt 8 days out of 7!!!
Go Hogs!!!
Any chance he could talk McFadden into staying his Senior Year (That’s likely to happen ha ha)
[...] Bobby Petrino to Arkansas…seriously? Surely this is some sort of practical joke. Right?? If it’s for real: wow. Filed under: Bobby Petrino, Football — John at 4:52 pm on Tuesday, December 11, 2007 [...]
if this is true I would love to see him keep Reggie as D-Coordinator.
Hope this one does stick!!! Awesome if it does…Go Hogs..
I am wholehog onboard with this hire. I wish that McFadden and Jones could hang another year. I understand if they don’t. I would like to see them graduate with a 4 year college degree. Let’s get it on hog nation. The drama is over!!!
I am to excited for words. YES
Glad to hear about Petrino.
Hope he keeps Reggie because just announced that Mr. Nutt hired a defensing CO away from Steve Spurrier so guess Reggie doesn’t have a place there;if he ever did.
Now, let’s hope the idiot minority fans don’t run Pertino off also.
Looking forward to being at the Cotton Bowl on New Years day and calling the HOGS!!!!
The mighty PIGS are back! Would love to see Dmac stay and get his Heisman next year, with TT coming in a distant second (or third). It would be icing on the cake if he stayed, but also foolish….GO HAWGS!!! GO PETRINO!! GO D-MAC!!!
Bring on the recruits!!!!!!!
Anyone who remembers Joe Lee Dunn, he just resigned from a high school job in Memphis,TN. to return to New Mexico to coach one of the college teams there.
At one point this year there was some kind of disipline problems and Joe Lee suspended his entire secondary for the game.
This is good news. Let’s hope it’s true and he is everything the media says he is.
Maybe this is the offensive mind we need!
Bobby Petrino built a national power and offensive juggernaut at Louisville. He should be an instant hit with recruits.
This dude is the real deal. He will have the Razorbacks in the BCS mix within 3 years.
I was starting to lose the faith, but if you can land this guy, very nice work, Jeff Long. GO HOGS!
This is almost too good to be true. Petrino is clearly one of the best college coaches in the game. His offensive mind with a DC like Herring could be incredible. I hope Reggie will stay on board.
Go Hogs!!!
Mustain will get what he deserves for leaving by NOT playing for USC. And Arkansas just got a coach who will take away any stigma that a good QB won’t be treated properly in Fayetteville!
texan, what does your comment mean exactly? this blog is about Petrino and the Hogs. Press conference @ 10:30 dont miss it!!!!
Go Hogs
Great hire!!!!! Just cautious about the contract, hope Long puts a huge buyout on it so no one will be tempted to steal him away after a couple years.
Should be great for recruits. Go Hogs!!!!!!!!!
This should be (assuming it is true) a hire we can all get on board and support. As much as we would all love to see D-Mac back it would be pretty darn nice to get Felix to stay — if they aren’t the two best backs to appear in the same backfield, in modern times, then I’ve missed something somewhere. We were lucky to have them and we may be lucky with who our new coach is as well.
Go Hogs!!!!
I finally get to say something positive about the Hog football program. This is absolutely outstanding. In fact it has turned out to be better than anticipated. I will take Patrino any day over Tubby, Bowden, Grobe. great News!
Maybe a good hire in the short run, but won’t be around for the long run. Just look at his history. Man won’t the Arkansas vs. Auburn game be interesting. Put that one on your calendar as a must see game. I’m sure ESPN will.
PIG SOOOOOIIIEEEEEE!!!!!!
With Petrino and the way Casey Dick has looked lately not to mention Tuck, Cleveland, DJ Williams, and Cruz Williams we could have a huge passing attack that no one will be ready for!!!
The talking heads on ESPN and in Atlanta are already saying that Bobby Petrino will be a short timer at the UA. Hehe.. whatever.
In my opinion, the majority of professional athletes are spoiled brats. I don’t blame Petrino for making a quick exit from the NFL.
Even if he doesn’t stay for long, the stage will one day be set for the Razorbacks to make a serious BCS run with Petrino. On the other hand, given the incredible facilities and fan base, the dude may be in hogtown for many years to come.
Regardless, live for the moment hog fans. If consumated, this will be a tremendous hire.
GO HOGS!

Great hire. Lets move forward now Razorback Nation. Please give the new coach help. It may take a few years to install his system. Great Recruiting within our state. Close the freakin borders to the thieves (ie Auburn, LSU & Ole Miss). Lets all be Positive an give the young high school players in our state a great reason to be Razorbacks. The Razorbacks need everybody in the whole State not divided for them to be truly successful. I hope Coach Herring will be offered a chance to stay if he wants to Go Hogs Go Woo Pig Soooie!!!
wow.
You Hog fans may regret this day. As a true red Cards fan it’s hard to think any other way. I realize Louisville doesn’t have the “tradition” of Arkansas but he left a national championship caliber team and that after numerous secret meetings with all kinds of schools. Now he bolts a job 3/4 of the way thru the FIRST season. We loved the winning and excitement he brought just not the lying, deceit and bullcrap excuses for his secret interviews when caught. This may be the way of modern college football but not fun wondering each day when you look at the the website whether there’s a similar story “Petrino quits, hired as HC at _________(insert any school name with big $$$)”. He was an offensive master and turned our program around. Just don’t be surprised if he jilts you for the next big $$$ deal a he did us. He’s all about the $$$, not loyalty to school, players and fans. You WILL enjoy it while it lasts though.
this is what I mean….Team owner Arthur Blank said Monday that he heard Arkansas had targeted Petrino to replace Houston Nutt as its coach and that the latest rumor about his head coach prompted him to ask Petrino that afternoon about his future plans.
Blank said Petrino, who was signed from the University of Louisville to a five-year, $24.5 million contract Jan. 8, told him that he would be back to coach the Falcons in 2008. It was the second time Blank had asked Petrino about his commitment to the team over the past few weeks and the second time Petrino told him he would be back next season.
At 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Petrino met Rich McKay, the team’s presiident and general manager, at the team’s Flowery Branch headquarters, he was quitting. Petrino then called Blank. Blank was “very disappointed, highly agitated and upset at [Tuesday's] developments,” according to a team official who was present at a lengthy meeting with senior team officials at Blank’s Buckhead offices Tuesday night.
…This is exactly how things went at least once a yr in Louisville. Jurich:”Here rumors about Auburn (or any other school without a coach) are you committed?” Petrino: “I’m on board Tom, looking forward to being here forever, blah blah blah”. See the pattern?
johnny,
You’re right, I think we will enjoy it. Not only will it be a shot in the arm on offense, but one thing Razorback football needs right now is someone to unite the program. I think most fans will agree this is a good hire for the hogs, (something we can all agree on) I also think this hire will help with the recruiting classes for the next few years. You’re right though, I’m not sure how long it’ll last but I sure am excited.
it’s obvious things weren’t working out in Atl. Not making excuses though, I think it was pretty sorry the way he left. Could have been done a lot better. I’m sure Arkansas brass put a lot of pressure on a quick decision.
I’m just glad they got him.
good article by forde. I knew the story, we lived it.

Will this unite the fanbase or ultimately turn on itself?
As far as recruiting goes…will a 5-star look at Arkansas and then hear about Louisville. They gave their promise to Petrino but now are being coached by a guy who couldn’t run a hot dog stand. he left us in the middle of hot recruiting time.
Winning can make you forget many things but we’ll always remember.
I do wish you luck, enjoy while you can. Who knows maybe you can change a tigers stripes. Just hope we can schedule you guys down the road. Nothing more Jurich would like to do than pin a loss on Petrino.
Johnnycard,
Do you think we are really concerned wtih “lying?” Don’t forget. We have endured the Clintons for years on the political scene and Houston Nutt in football.
Go Hogs!
I think the Hogs are getting a great offensive minded head coach that will bring excitement to the Razorback nation. Now let just hope he is smart enough to keep Reggie Herring around to build the defense that is neeed to win a National Championship. It took long enough but I think AD Long has startd wiping of the egg on the face of Arknsas Athletics.
Sooooiiiiieeee Pig Soooiiiiieeee
Most coaches dreams are to coach in the NFL but most find it is a different animal than college.Like Holtz and many others ,Petrino took his shot and found it wasnt what he wanted.I believe he will stay here and have the powerhouse team that hog fans should have had the last 2 yrs.If he can just keep the talent instate we will have a hell of a team every yr.Just think of all the great talent we have lost the last 3 yrs!!!!Lets get behind the coach give him his shot at a national title.
I agree oink2u2.You put all the pussies in their place with that one line.Lets get behind Petrino and win a NC.
Stop Drinking the cool-aid Hogs… Bobby Petrino is already talking to Bill Martin and school president Mary Sue Coleman of Michigan about the open coaching position!
