McFadden walks away empty-handed…again

NEW YORK — Darren McFadden seemed at peace with the fact that he did not win the Heisman Trophy tonight. It was the second year in a row that Arkansas' junior running back finished second in the race.

This time, Florida quarterback Tim Tebow won the award and by doing so he became the first sophomore to win college football's biggest prize. Tebow secured 1,957 points, 254 more than McFadden.

“I have no regrets,” McFadden said. “If I had to do it all over again, I’d do it the same way. I love all my fans back home. I don’t think they are going to disown me because I didn’t win the Heisman.”

Tebow was complimentary of McFadden, who rushed for 1,725 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2007.

"He’s going to be a great player in the NFL Draft," said Tebow who has passed for 3,132 yards and has rushed for 838 yards while also setting an SEC record for touchdowns produced with 51 scores through the air and on the ground. "I know that was tough but he’s a strong person."

Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel, who finished fourth in the voting, said it was a foregone conclusion that Tebow would win.

“Everybody knew it was going to him, so it was no surprise," Daniel said. “Congratulations go to him.”

  1. Really sucks but Darren will respond like a winner and move on with his life.Good luck Bro.

  2. Darren got screwed by ESPN! They have had Tebow as their poster boy for weeks! You tell me that Tebow, as a soph., deserves to win the Heisman when Hershel Walker didn't win it as a soph. with over 1800 rushing yards! Do they really believe that Tebow is better than Walker was! He's not even better than DMac is now! Tebow won because ESPN flexed its muscles and chose him to win.

  3. Of course, ESPN pushed Tebow at every chance. No surprise to me. Pushed for the history and first time for something to happen. Everyone always wants to be a part of something happening for the first time.

  4. Did anyone see how Nutt reacted when Tebow won? I never liked him as a coach, but I understand his reaction. You could tell that he knew DMac got screwed out the heisman trophy the second year in a row. The video is on espn.com and Nutt is in the background, you may have to watch it several times before you notice him.

  5. hello guys , never posted before and not posting now to be attack. but being a hog fan all my life has been fun until the last 2 years. it seems that there are so many people that think that they have the right answer for everything as far as who is at fault and having a coach to blame for everything. life is not perfect. and people who takes time to think about that would know that. what would be nice for a change would be able to see the negative go away. and try to hold up our young people and program. but there will be someone say you are a nut supporter. no I am a hog supporter and those young people on the hill need better examples the hate from the fans so focus on attacking. nut is gone please people grow up and move on. the bad things that you say do not add to but only take away. so please think about the fact if there is any good in you see if you can use it to bring positive to our state and school.

he who perfect cast the first stone

  6. Who would've thought McFadden wouldn't win the Heisman after the season he had. DMAC, you got screwed.

  7. TEBOW DIDN'T BEAT DMAC - ESPN DID AND
    FLORIDA BEAT ARKANSAS....POLITICS??

  8. The ESPN factor was huge. Win the Doak Walker Award and the Walter Camp Award, but not the Heisman? At least the Sporting News got it right. Darren McFadden was the best this year against the best. Doesn't that make him the best player in college football? Isn't that what the Heisman is all about?

  9. I don’t think they are going to disown me because I didn’t win the Heisman.” You are the man and a RAZORBACK. You are our HEISMAN WINNER no matter what fowler. corso and the journalist say.

  10. I am so proud of all the razorback players. Hillis, Jones, Luigs and so many more.

  11. To HogFan717 - thanks for your post. It's time for Hogs fans everywhere to back off the attack, let the past be the past and look to the future. It seems that many in this forum are Arkansas fans with only a need to blame and complain, accuse and demand.

I second your post. Time to move along Hogs. Look to a future with hope and excitement.

  12. Thank you HDN and STAFF for bringing these multi-award winning players to the U of A, they have highlighted a season(s) speckled with hatred and negativity. Thank you Razorback followers and true lovers of the program for being among the most supportive fans in College Football, that helps elevate our program to one that prestige players will consider attending. Let's be proud today.

  13. I’d like to encourage hog fans to have compassion for all those venting on Nutt, ESPN, White, and others they blame for some lack of Razorback success. Many people have frustration, fear and anger in their lives, but they can’t express it in negativity towards their family, boss or others close to them because of reactions that could further diminish the quality of their lives. (Or, more likely, they do to those people as well.) It’s sad that we’re in a stress epidemic, most Americans live in debt, and problems abound that people have trouble dealing with. There are some effective ways to get rid of negativity without focusing it on others, and I hope many find them.

  14. [...] * For exhaustive coverage of McFadden’s trip to New York for last night’s Heisman announcement, you should check out Rainer Sabin’s fine work at The Slophouse Blog. [...]

  15. 108 you are starting to sound like Dr. Phil. (HAHA)
    Go Hogs!!!

  16. The Heisman isn't all its cracked up to be. Look at some of the past recipients. Tell me. Where is Troy Smith, Jason White, Eric Crouch, Chris Weinke and Danny Wuerfel?? That goes back 11 years with Heisman winners that are NO WHERE to be found on Sunday afternoons in the NFL.

Yes, its a shame Darren didn't get it. But, I'll bet he plies his trade in the NFL starting next year to start what will be a storied career.

Ask Lance Alworth if he thinks not getting the Heisman was a letdown for him. He'd laugh at you and so will Darren someday.

  17. From 1990 through 2006 the Heisman was won 13 of 17 times by the candidate that won the Walter Camp Award. From 1990 through 2006 the Heisman was won every time a candidate won both the Walter Camp and the Doak Walker Award except in 2002. In 2002 Larry Johnson won the Walter Camp, Doak Walker and the Maxwell awards but did not get the Heisman. They gave it to Carson Palmer who also did not win the O’Brien Award. From 1990 through 2006 the Heisman was won only twice with a single O’Brien award (Chris Weinke 2000 and Jason White 2003). From 1990 through 2006 the Heisman was won only once after winning the O’Brien and Maxwell only (Ty Detmer 1990). Ty Detmer did not go up against a winner of both the Walter Camp and Doak Walker awards. No underclassman has ever won the award before 2007. McFadden’s awards (Doak Walker Award winner, the Walter Camp Player of the Year, the SEC Coaches Offensive Player of the Year and an AFCA, Sporting News Player of the Year, Walter Camp and Rivals first-team All-American). Summary: The journalists gave the wrong player the trophy. They created a storyline and avoided talking about Darren during mid-season so Tebow could build steam. Poster boy?
In 1997, Charles Woodson only won the Walter Camp Award and beat out Peyton Manning who won both the O’Brien and Maxwell awards. Matt Leinart did the same thing again to Jason White in 2004.

  18. It's obvious that the Heisman is a political trophy of the most popular rather than the best college football player. When you hear that one of the voters publicly said, "McFadden is the best, but..." it shows how the purpose of the Heisman has evolved over the years, in spite of its hype to be an award to the player with the best ability. The other awards Darren earned show his worth. There are several NFL teams that are salivating over Darren and it won't matter whether he has the Heisman or not. The Razorbacks and our opponents know DMac's value.
    Go Hogs!

  19. I watched this race with interest the whole year and I believe the ESPN announcers went out of their way to promote Tbow over the others. They reported repeatedly how they had already voted and that Tbow was the best player for the award. I thought their job was to announce the news not promote it. If there was another organiation to listen to I would be listening. Costo sucks all the way. no wonder he is no longer a coach. He just wants to hear himself talk all the time. He even showed up at the Hiesman so he could talk some more.

  20. 33 of 41 years going back to 1967 the Walter Camp Award winner won the Heisman.
1967 Gary Beban Maxwell only, 1989 Andre Ware O’Brien only, Weinke and White won it with the O’Brien only.
George Rogers, Earl Campbell, Carson Palmer all won the Heisman without the Walter Camp, Doak Walker, Maxwell, or O’Brien Awards.
That brings us to Ty Detmer which is the only player in history to win the Heisman without the Walter Camp Award and did win the O’Brien and Maxwell awards.
Last point, no double Doak Walker Award winner was shut out of the Heisman, in history.

  21. Darren you don't need to be in that club to be a TRUE HEISMAN. You're in a very special club of Walter Camp Award winners and Doak Walker Award winners which puts you in with the most prestigious of the history of college football. Those are facts regardless of what the clueless journalist voters say. This makes me more mad than all the other crap that has gone on the past year. I did the home work for all the fans to see the TRUE HEISMAN WINNER.

  22. Both players are deserving of the prize, but the whole year Arkansas media and fans spent their time bashing the coaches, team ,and yes players. Even to the point of emailing copies of Wally Hall's hate blogs to the likes of ESPN and Fox Sports. Add that to the banners, Photo-shops in a negative tone, booing, FOI's lawsuits, negative videos on YouTube, bashing of players and coaches in the national media, all negative stuff, and you will conveince others to become negative towards Arkansas.
In the mean time, Florida was pimping TeeBow and their school every chance they could.
Its politics, PR, and perception. Say what you will, but until Arkansas media and fans wake up, this sort of thing will happen again. Whether its a recruit, a new coach, or the Heisman. Bring enough negativity to yourself, and you won't like the results. You are already finding out how hard the negativity is to overcome finding a new coach, it hurt Dmacs Heisman chances. Seems you folks would wake up, quit acting like juvenile kids and quit hurting yourselves.
Good luck Darren, go get paid in the NFL and when you do, shake some of the green in the face of that person who told you to "shut up and run the ball".

  23. For the rest of my life i will never have anything to do with Heisman because of their lack of vision of who is truly a Heisman Winner. I will always look at Darren McFadden as a 2 time winner of the Heisman. Those old guys need to go back and re-think who is truly deserving.

  24. I think day in and day out that Darren McFadden is the best football player in America. But one must admit that he was shut down by Auburn and Tennessee and those two games cost him the Heisman trophy. It had nothing to do with ESPN or favoritism. Tebow deserved it. Look at his numbers in the greatest league in the land. Yes, Darren had a great year but not as good as Tebow. It doesn't matter whether he's a soph or not. It matters what he did on the fielt. This reaction I'm reading is typcial poor sportmanship Arkansas crap....never giving credit to the other team or other player. lts always look at me..poor little Arkansas. We got screwed. You guys make me sick.
Be men and admit that the best man won the trophy. He got it the old fashioned way. He earned it.
Mcfadden is getting ready to become a mulit-millionaire. That's his trophy.

  25. Darren McFadden is a good football player. I think the reason he did not get the Heisman trophy is because he was not on the field at the end of the Alabama game. If Arkansas picks up one first down they win that game. Arkansas ended up with four losses which is alot for a Heisman winner. He also fumbled twice against LSU. Tebow is a tougher football player than DMC in my opinion.

  26. bobbyreb,

Does Ole Miss not have a blog site for you? Take your sophmoric comments about Razorback fans somewhere else, preferrably the Grove.

  27. thank you hogfan717,bobyreb, and everyone with commone sense. i realy don't understand arkansas fans sometime. i am not going to be one of those people who sit back and bash the coaching staff and administration. i agree that we need to put the past behind us. we as fans have brought shame to our great university and state. that is the reason no big name coach wants to come here. did we not learn that lesson with the basketball coaching situation? (thank the good lord it worked out ok) mr.white is doing the best he can believe it or not. who wants to come to a place where your family has rocks thrown at them and termination banners flying over the stadium. fans PLEASE LET'S ACT LIKE ADULTS! everyone ask yourself do i want my child to go a university with a bunch of high school drama?????????????
lets' support our hogs and see if we can not turn this thing around.

  28. Regarding the comment about Darren not being on the field at the end of the Alabama game......he had a CONCUSSION!!!! You do not put a young man back on the field to win a football game in that situation. PERIOD. Maybe they do that in Florida, but we do NOT do that in Arkansas. You are ALSO wrong in stating that Darren is a "good" football player. He is a GREAT football player.....on the field AND off the field. ESPN talking heads did a great job of promoting Tebow for the Heisman. Tebow had the ball in his possession 70% of the time...McFadden about 35% of them. Do the math......then you will become aware of the best college football player of 2007. I wish nothing but the best for both of these young men. I really don't care WHERE they come from. And by the way.......last I heard, Arkansas BEAT LSU which Florida was unable to do???? Enough Said.

  29. UA should hire Todd Dodge as our next Football Coach and we have an instant replacement for DMac - Tre' Newton who is currently headed to Texas, and also the next Chase Daniel (also coached by Dodge) in Riley Dodge - (yes his son) and 2 time Texas 5A player of the year ... and a long line of Texas Football recruits again ... FINALLY!

  30. Tebow's stats were good, and they were compiled on last year's national championship team with returning starters in front. Further, even given his obvious talent, he could not prevail against eventual SEC conference champs LSU. McFadden did.

For those of us who actually remember and watched the freshman and sophomore seasons of Hershel Walker and Bo Jackson in the SEC, McFadden was a mirror of that type of dominant player. Tebow is a good quarterback, possibly a great one. It's difficult to make that assessment at this point. Next year could find him behind another SEC talent in stats. We've seen it happen before. I don't envy any young man having the type of target on his back he now has as he continues to play college football at this level. The Heisman voters have done him a disservice, and not a favor. They could and should have waited until next year for this award, and given the award instead to the player who most deserved it this year, which was McFadden.

I recall a letter I wrote to the commissioner of the SEC when Peyton Manning was snubbed for the Heisman trophy in favor of Michigan's Charles Woodson. The same was true then as now. The most deserving player didn't win, but sometimes life is much more than a single award at a single moment. Here's wishing the type of NFL success Heisman runner-up Peyton Manning has had to Darren McFadden. Go D-MAC! We'll be watching you.

  31. Yes, UA87,Ole Miss has a blog site...but I get a kick
out of watching you folks who ran Houston Nutt off
squirm. A minority of Americans don't want prayer in
school so our leaders panic and cater to the minority.
A minority of football knowlege poor fans want a coach gone so the UA administration caters to that minority.
You shall RUE the day you caused so much grief for Houston and his fine family. As I said, I get a real kick out of watching you guys squirm. Who you gonna hire?
Aren't you about down to your 8th or 9th choice. Coaches know what happened. They aren't i the dark.
Good luck (you're definitely gonna need it). I'll tell you how smart you folks are: You really think Gus Malzahn is the answer. That makes me feel sorry for you..not
upset with it. That's just pitiful that your football knowledge is so weak.

  32. bobbyreb
I think we have your answer. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it. I am not squirming, I am elated. Have you ever thought about taking an English course or perhaps using a grammar and spell checker program?

  33. bobbyreb
Tebow has no memorable moment. He has the cumulative effort of becoming the first college quarterback to throw for 20 or more touchdowns and rush for at least 20 TDs (12 of which were less than 3 yards and a few more 5 or less). But as far as a single game of brilliance against a top-level opponent? There is nothing. There is no moment of brilliance, no transcendent game or highlight against a power team to remember.
You say our football knowledge is weak. I posted some facts for you to chew on earlier. You haven't refuted any of those facts.
33 of 41 years going back to 1967 the Walter Camp Award winner won the Heisman. No double Doak Walker Award winner was shut out of the Heisman, in history. Now, as a homework assignment tell us the difference between the Walter Camp and the Maxwell awards. In the history of college football every candidate that won both the Walter Camp and the Doak Walker awards, also won the Heisman. We will be waiting for your scholarly report.
