Grobe to stay at Wake Forest
Jim Grobe will not be the Razorbacks’ next head football coach, a source close to the University of Arkansas confirmed Thursday morning to the Northwest Arkansas Times.
Grobe, the current coach at Wake Forest, had a change of heart after emerging as the leading candidate for the position Wednesday. Major media outlets in Arkansas said a deal was close to being finalized between Grobe and Arkansas.
Negotiations with Grobe took place Wednesday, and he was expected to fly to Arkansas on Thursday.
Grobe helped the Demon Deacons achieve a school record 11 victories in 2006, as Wake Forest won the Atlantic Coast Conference championship and earned a trip to a BCS bowl.
The Demon Deacons went 8-4 this year and will play Connecticut on Dec. 29 in the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte, N.C.

This is a surprise. I wasn’t excited about Grobe, but somehow I’m disappointed that he too has shot us down. Clearly, for various reasons, Arkansas can’t hire a big time, proven head coach. I’d have been thrilled with Butch Davis or Tuberville, but Bowden and Grobe are pretty much lateral moves compared to Nutt. Considering that Skip Holtz and Ron English have been mentioned, I’m very concerned. I could accept an accomplished coordinator or up and coming young head coach, but either of those 2 would depress me. Seriously, someone tell me what’s so wrong with Todd Graham of Tulsa. He’s done a good job at Rice and Tulsa, coaching both programs to improved records in his first year. He’s young, he has recruiting ties to Texas and Oklahoma, and he’d likely bring Malzahn back as OC.
This coaching search is so painful to watch…so many rumored names, but nothing….deals being finalized, but nothing. Why don’t the “powers that be” put the search on hold until after the bowl game? I know recruiting must go on, but as we all know by now, 5 of the assistants are going to Ole Miss and it seems to me that these guys could be lame duck recruiters. I would hope they would have enough integrity to truly recruit for the Hogs, but the truth of the matter is that nobody really knows. What do they have to lose? With the suggestions out there that Reggie Herring could put an excellent coaching staff together, why not give him a shot? He is an intense guy who loves the Razorbacks and he is going to do everything in his power to take down Mizzou in Dallas. Just my opinion, but i guess that is what blogs are for.
Dear Jeff,
I realize you don’t understand us. It is not your fault. You were offered a great job, at a great place to live.
You are no longer at Pitt. We expect much more. Please do your homework. We don’t need a big name. We need an honest, hard working coach. A coach who can hire talented OC/DC’s and let them do their job. A coach who can recruit our best talent, as well as texas and oklahoma athletes. A coach that bleeds cardinal red.
If you quit with all this recent past foolishness, I will stand by you. I know that is important to you.
Go get ‘em hog.
Sincerely,
The Razorback Nation
Westcoasthog has my vote for AD if this Long fad doesn’t take.
OH my, he pulled an “altman” but at least he didn’t even bother to show up.
Now What Dr. White & “brain trust” (I use that term with malace).
Give Reggie the damn job!
[...] since the shocking news broke that Jim Grobe was returning to Wake Forest, the entire Razorback Expats staff has been frantically working the phones to figure out what went [...]
well, well, well….we see the list shorten yet again. He probably heard how he could never please a loud minority of people that ran off the last coach, and decided to stay where he was appreciated. Good move on his part.
Welcome to reality, Razorback Nation!
What do you think, Bobby Petrino? Can you handle it? It’s better than the Atlanta job right now!
The REAL supporters of Razorback Nation want the team to succeed and bring a championship to the Hill. It is very unfortunate that a small percentage of frauds are the loudest voices. The frauds i am talking about are the people who dig up a coach’s personal phone records and people who send negative e-mails to players. Those are not the real Razorback fans.
Short list, in no particular order:
1. Reggie Herring, UA, with an NFL OC who will “amaze.”
Comment: Understands UA and SEC football. Aware of the importance of balance on offense and delegating authority. With the right staff can take the program to the next level.
2. .Todd Graham, Tulsa, with Gus Malzahn as OC.
Comment: An “up and comer”. Would bring Malzahn with him and a wide open attack. With a DC who can recruit some athletes, could take the program to the next level.
3. Mike Leach, Texas Tech.
Comment: Stable and proven winner in a somewhat inferior program in the BIG 12, as far as facilities and geographic location are concerned. With a DC who can recruit some athletes, could take the program to the next level.
Grobe and Bowden “dissing” the UA, in my opinion, were a HUGE blessing in disguise. Get it right, Jeff Long. GO HOGS!
Amazing enough..
The 1% FANS pushed this to occur.. Think of the pomp and circumstance.. Wanting a Big Time Name.. When all in all in true reality the players play for the School and the Coach..
Reaching down in deeper water usually gets someone drowned. Only a NUTT would coach at such a school..
Money aint everything.. ~believe that
Notice what some outsiders now read and see.. per a BLOG.. (go figure)

At this point, I almost want to feel for the Arkansas fans, but… I think the biggest culprits are the Arkansas football fans.
It bears repeating that the way Nutt was… basically abused… by the Razorbacks fan base poisoned the pool at Arkansas.
If you’re going to have fans digging through your personal life, blasting you in the media, booing you at public appearances, and running banners calling for you to be fired during games — all while your team is winning — then why would any coach in their right mind willingly step into that environment?
The Arkansas fans are reaping what they sowed and until they own up to that… it may be a long couple of years for the Hogs.

The Springdale Lynch Mob has clearly sent a very loud statement to all of the country! Great coached are NOT COMING to deal with the SLM!
SLM wins again. Arent you PROUD of yourselves! We all know that the small little minority (SLM) has poisoned the hogs for many years and thyey will not be happy until Gus comes riding back into town.
SLM, thanks for all your help. Clearly it is working!
Congratulations!

Youngblood and Curtis are crucial to the FUTURE of Razorback football.
GO HOGS
Right on gatorhawg!!!!!!!!! If they want Gus soooo bad they can hire him back as the high school coach. We don’t need prima donnas and their mommas. Whoever is hired I will support. I say give Reggie a chance. If not what about Brent Venables at OK. Just get it over with, make the hire, and we can come together as 1 group of RAZORBACK supporters!! GO HOGS!! BEAT MIZZOU!!!! GET EM READY REGGIE
Frisco,
Thanks for the amen. The MAJORITY (the real hog fans) are just going to have to sit back and let the mob bring in the National Championsip Coach who will be winning all these National Championships and will always win 11-12 games a year and dominate the weak (tounge in cheek) SEC, winn SEC Championships every year.
I dont know about you, but I cant wait!
Lets see now, Bowden didn’t want us and he certainly has a number of National Titles. Oh, I forgot he has none. Now this Wake Forest coach dosent want us? OH my goodnees. Lets take the time to digest this one. A WAKE FOREST FOOTBALL COACH DOSENT WANT TO COME HERE AND CAOCH THE HOGS?
There will be such an abundance of CROW to eat it wont even be funny.
The SLM will have to sell crow on ebay!
Just waiting on the Championships to begin!
Grobe not coming is a blessing in disguise. For a so called “proven” coach, It all comes down to wins and losses and he’s barely won 50% of the games he’s coached - HDN was at 60%!!!
Jeff Long: you are like some dude playing Russian Roulette. Wow, you’ve gotten so lucky that Bowden and Grobe haven’t taken the job. I fear what you’re going to do next.
All I can say is the sea of candidates is parting for the best offensive mind that has ever had ties to the great state of Arkansas. He’s available. He would cost as much. He’s honest. He’d be the best coach we’ve had in a long time. AND HIS NAMED IS GUS MALZAHN!!!!!
Correction, meant to say “He wouldN’T cost as much”
Same ole same ole from the Uof A. I don’t know which is worse, the state of Arkansas Football or the St. Louis Cardinals organization. The search has become a joke, but everyone feel free to blog any nonsense they would like, it makes fun reading. Someone fly a few more banners. At least the state still has Wal-Mart and I really enjoy seeing the infomercial on Bella Vista Estates everyday out here in Nevada.
It is a sad day when a coach from a basketball school turns down a million dollar raise. One can only speculate why he turned us down, but I lean toward the postings of younghog and gatorhawg. My best guess is that he saw some of “fans” recaction, and said to himself, “A psychotic and unrealistic fanbase is not worth the million dollar raise.” How pathetic is that, disgruntled hog fans? You have have made this job so unattractive that a man will turn down one million dollars to avoid the scrutiny. Good luck luring that “big name” with those banners and FOIA requests.
Wake up!! Disgruntled fans. The “big names” for which you are calling are not answering. In the vein of Rick Pitino: Butch Davis is not walking throught that door. Jimmy Johnson is not walking through that door. Even Tommy Bowden and Jim Grobe are not walking through that door.
And Gus Malzahn? AYFS (figure it out)? The guy’s staff would be a joke. He may be good in the future, but right now ain’t the future.
I totally agree with most of the comments in terms of taint being tossed on the UA program from a vocal minority, as well as the consequences which seem to be brewing.
I was somewhat of a supporter of HDN, though felt that he and his staff made some really boneheaded coaching decisions, both on and off the field. I am indifferent about Malzahn and certainly feel that he does not have the experience to be a college head coach at the present time, at any level. I got off the Mustain bandwagon when he orignally decommitted, early on, and seemed to relish the spotlight [along with mommie dearest]
Regardless, we all need to move forward and Jeff Long needs to pull his head out of his ass. In my opinion, Tommy Bowden and Jim Grobe would have been huge misfits for both the UA and SEC football.
Just for grins, a short list might include the following, in no particular order:
Wake up, Long. GO HOGS!
skezell: AYFS - that’s cute. I figured it out and no I’m not. I don’t think wanting the best coach available is stupid.
You have a valid argument on the staff. I agree, it’s a negative. However, I believe he’d be able to put together a staff which will allow him to win. Once he wins, he’ll get even better coaches. If Nutt could get good assistants (which you’ve got to hand it to him, he EVENTUALLY did) after being at Murray St. two years before coming to Arkansas, then Malzahn can certainly do it.
MALZAHN IS THE ANSWER!!!
While coaches may be using the Arkansas opening to their advantage, getting extensions, raises, etc., it is still good to see Arkansas taking the Michigan approach to finding a coach rather than the Ole Miss approach. Let’s see the results in a year or two and compare which approach worked best.
Hire Malzahn…the “s” was for serious, not stupid? I’m not going to call anyone that.
[...] Fanhouse…Arkansas Sports 360…The Hog Blogger…Razorback Expats-(funny stuff)…The Slophouse. And finally The Razorbloggers-(funny/sad [...]
Well, in that case - YES, I am serious. And seriously right as well.
HIRE MALZAHN!!!
If he could gather a respectable staff, I don’t have a problem with Malzahn. People make too much of the high school aspect…many good/great modern coaches started in high school. I just have my doubts about his connections because he most definitely would have to start from the ground and build up, as no on the current staff will stay with him as HC.
Why do people blame Gus for the fiasco caused by Nutts lies and his wifes meddling?Any coach that would let his team back their QB against a wall and threatin to whup his ass then let his wife send emails wanting someone to whup Mtches mother isnt fit to coach young men. He’s a hypocrit inside out who blames everyone else for his failers.Nutt split the fan base when he benched Mitch after 8 straight wins and never played him again. He tried to destroy Mitch and the other freshmen but he failed like he always does.Enough said about Nutt.Hirs the best mind in college today Gus Malzahn .
Most of the desired coaches have observed that there is very little “esprit de corps.” or “esprit de hogs.” There has been a mentality of, “We have a common enemy and his name is HDN” rather than, “I may not particularly care for the coach, but no matter what, ‘Go Hogs’.” What coach wants to step into the middle of that atmosphere? It has been obvious to all of America that especially in Arkansas, loyalty to the Razorback program is very shaky at best, and the cause for that was not HDN, but those that wanted him gone at any and all cost.
Go Hogs!!!
Folks, I’m sorry, but I have never logged in until today, and I am sure that I am going to offend someone. But, I don’t care.
I’ve been a die hard Razorback fan since the 1969 Texas game when I was 7 years old and I have watched the fortunes of the Razorbacks rise and fall over nearly 40 years. I’ve also been a fan and observer of college sports for most of that time, particularly football.
But, I have to say that the Arkansas fans who ran HDN off are the sorriest bunch of yellow-bellied sap-suckers I have ever seen in my decades as a fan.
If you asked for the e-mail records, telephone records, paid for a banner to fly over the stadiums, or are supporters of the Springdale gang, you are a bunch of IDIOTS! (I don’t use those words lightly).
YOU, YES YOU, have turned the Arkansas Football Program and the head coaching job at Arkansas into the biggest “JOKE” in college football!
When the head coach of a recent former football dormat “Wake Forest” turns an SEC program down with OUR facilities, you have made us a joke. When a head coach at a Basketball school like North Carollna, with Arkansas ties mind you, turns us down, you have made us a joke.
When you visit the N.C.A.A. C.F. websites and every other college or University searching for a head coach has proven, big name, winning coaches on their “I’m interested list” and Arkansas’ list is without a single big name coach or really anyone you’ve heard of, YOU have turned the Arkansas job into a joke.
Mr. Rick Schafer, the former sports information director at the U of A has said for years that, due to Arkansas small recruiting base, playing who we play in the SEC year after year, we ought to be grateful to put together a team that a 10 or 11 win season and wins the SEC every 4-6 years.
Were Arkansas in any other conference, under HDN, our 7 wins seasons would have been 9 wins, our 8 win seasons would have been 10 wins and our 9 win seasons would have been 11 wins.
I believe it was Nick Saban who once said, (something to this effect), that it is amazing that HDN is competitive every year with the players he is able to recruit to AR. Imagine what he would do if he had a recruiting base like LSU or Florida.
NOW, YOUR ****ing, griping, and complaining have left us the laughing stock of the college football world.
I’ve been saying to family, friends, and any Razorback fan who would listen, ever since this psycho-crazy fan nastiness began, “If we run off HDN, who do we think we’re going to get to want to come and coach at Arkansas? God Almighty, himself?
Come on, please. You guys are IDIOTS!
Look where YOU have put us and the AR coaching job today! We are the joke of the College Football world and IT IS YOUR FAULT!
