Herring not a candidate, but….
Arkansas interim head coach Reggie Herring said he is not a candidate for Arkansas’ head coaching job; however, he did throw in a “but.”
Herring said Wednesday that as long as the the criteria for the job is being a head coach elsewhere, he’s not going to stick his neck out for the job.
However, if Jeff Long, Arkansas’ incoming athletics director, is going to interview coordinators like LSU’s Bo Pelini, Oklahoma’s Brent Venables or Tulsa’s Gus Malzahn, Herring would like to interview, too, saying that no coordinator in the nation know and understands Arkansas’ situation better than he does. He also added that people would be amazed at the coaching staff he could put together, which would include an offensive coordinator from the NFLl.

Hey Reggie, if you can put together a bad to the bone staff and not let the Nutt departure hinder you from taking us to the next level I would give you a one year shot to see what you can do. If all goes well I think you should get a shot at a more permanent contract. If you can beef up that defense some more that would be a super deal. Take the time now and tell us your startegy. I think razorback nation would love to hear your plan for the staff.
I am ready to be amazed. I am serious. You made the statement, “people would be amazed at the coaching staff he could put together, which would include an offensive coordinator from the NFL”. The right staff could be more important than any one coach. You got me curious. Lay it on us Reggie. You got the floor.
I encourage fans who would entertain the thought of giving Reggie his shot to read the transcript of his bowl-game press conference from today on hogwired.com. He goes into a lot of what his coaching philosophy is and it sounds pretty darn good. They’re only words and we’ll see it in action on January 1st, but he certainly at least “talks” like a good head coach. I certainly liked what I saw.
First of all, Reggie said the coordinator would be from the NFL “I”. That’s the INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE. And they DO have some outstanding coaches.
Second: Do these coaches ACTUALLY contribute on these msg boards? I would be under the ASSUMPTION that they DO NOT!
Third: I don’t have a great understanding of Coach Herrings’ career, qualifications, experience, etc…. But I do know one thing; sometimes it’s a GREAT thing to bring in a [name] that’s NOT well known, or famous, but a [name] that has a great philosophy, game plan, and personality to jumpstart, or even, elevate things to that next level. A fresh perspective, so to speak.
Forth: If hiring the next Arkansas head coach were under the “voting scheme” of things, I WOULD VOTE FOR COACH HERRING because I like his attitude and approach towards the game, the media, but most of all… to his players. These kids look up to Coach Herring, and I WOULD support the “gamble” on that promotion. If AR wins the bowl game, convincingly, I feel he deserves and hard look my the UA Administration!
{sorry for the bad spelling :D}
i would concur with the majority. reggie sounds pretty damn impressive concerning his coaching style and ability to delegate. in addition, the players clearly love and respect the guy. GO HOGS! http://www.hogwired.com
ps. herring’s tough as hell, also. ;)
I think he has a short period of time here to tell us his plan. It has to be specific and verifiable. I would like him to spell it out for the players and the fans. That is only fair and would prevent any misjudgment or underestimation on the part of the UofA, fans, and players ready to commit. I don’t see anything wrong with coming forward early and putting his plan out there. He has 27 years of experience and now is the time to demonstrate his skills with the press, UofA, and his ability to put the staff in place to earn his place as our beloved head coach. He knew this was coming and has had time to think about the possibility. Make the calls to your future staff and lay the plan on us. Don’t wait for someone to be hired and then feel bad for being passed over.
Good comments, allentx. Some of us are listening. We want to hear what he has to say, and are open-minded about the decision on whom to hire.
reggie herring as far as i have seen is a very respectable guy and i think he would be great if hired and he is the type that would bow out if he couldn’t perform as expected
and you could always say our coach can whip yours
as far as i remember how and who a coach is he is it
gus malzahn and reggie would kick everyones butt if teamed
but they won’t get chance because everybody wants someone we have seen
new and fresh kick butt
why do we want to be auburn or clemson when have they won a championship malzahn has and look at tulsa
and gus can win the games decided by 3 points where would we be now
