Spurrier likes Nutt, doesn’t think too much of Butch

You gotta love the Ol’ Ball coach. He’ll talk about anything. If you asked him about Foucault and postmodern philosophy, he’d probably have an opinion and offer a sarcastic, but witty response to your question.

On Monday, Spurrier weighed in on the drama in Arkansas and said he couldn’t figure out why Butch Davis‘ name keeps popping up in connection with the Razorbacks:

Spurrier had something to say about other coaches whose names are floating around message boards and talk-radio shows.

One was North Carolina first-year coach Butch Davis, whose name is coming up in conjunction with the Arkansas coaching job. Houston Nutt is reportedly going to step down there.

“When you’re hot you’re hot, and when you’re not you’re not,” Spurrier said. “And we’re not right now. That’s what sort of surprising about Butch Davis. He’s not too hot right now but I keep seeing his name out there.”

Spurrier added he thought Davis being an Arkansas native changed that tune a bit. UNC, right now, is 3-8.

And, he added, he thinks Nutt might hang on there. Arkansas is 7-4 heading into this week’s LSU game. “I sort of think he’s going to survive it all,” Spurrier said of Nutt. “They’re a pretty good team.”

  1. Davis sounds like a good defensive coach under Jimmy Johnson. Davis was defensive line coach at Miami from 1984-88 under head coach Jimmy Johnson, whom he also coached under for five years in Dallas and five years at Oklahoma State. The Hurricanes went 52-9 in those five years and won the national championship after beating Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl to cap a perfect 12-0 record in 1987. With Jimmy at the helm and Davis on defense we just need to fill in some more offensive, defensive, and special teams’ spots. I think Dave Wannsted had a unique relationship with Jimmy. Jimmy was a tough demanding coach. Jimmy can run the show, Davis can run defense, Norv can run the offense and Dave could smooth things out and be Jimmy’s good friend. Norv Turner is to quarterbacks what George Patton was to soldiers. Turner has had the ability to drive and bring out the best in the men who have served behind center for him. His track record is too strong, too consistent, for him to be The Accidental Quarterbacks Coach. We need a tough demanding winner at the helm like Jimmy regardless of what Jerry Jones says. Jerry, he got it done for you at the cowboys so get behind him one more time. Get over the personal issues or get out of the way. It’s time to hire a proven WINNER and staff.

  2. I need to give credit to a source for part of my previous comment according to what I learned in college writing. http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/canepa/20070811-9999-1s11canepa.html

  3. Nutt asks for us to stop the speculation. I have been speculating Nutt would win an SEC title and national title for 3 years. Okay, I will quit speculating.

  4. Lloyd Carr made an excellent retirement speech. He made it clear that his announcement/retirement was about the program and recruitment for next year. Nutt should listen to his speech. Carr was unselfish and humble. He clearly loves Michigan football above himself.

  5. GO HOGS BABY… GO HOGS

  6. I’m sure Spurrier and most of the better coaches in the sec LIKE Nutt and want him to stay. He’s easy to coach against.

  7. dudes, i really think we need to give this thing a rest - at least publicly. UA currently has a long list of recruits and they look pretty decent - according to most reporting services. much more spin on this nutt thing and the recruiting gods are going to take a major dump on us. let the thing ride privately. if a decision is made for change, it needs to be done swiftly and effectively.

  8. Reaganite, that may be this motivation. Who knows? Frankly, it’s a mystery why Spurrier would even discuss Arkansas’ situation. I wonder if he was prompted by a reporter.

  9. Oh, I’m sure it’s because some delusioned “Nutt-bagger” thinks Spurrier is interested in coaching at Arkansas…..isn’t everyone who has ever won a nc somewhere? Heck, Bill Belichick is probably waiting by the phone for that phone call of a career advancement opportunity from White. ….sniff, sniff…..what is that? oh, yeah, that’s sarcasm. Stop baggin’ on Nutt! The nc is coming, Razorback Nation! Don’t screw it up by running him off!

  10. Agree friscohawg and dwp007… all this public fan-fickleness is going to hurt recruiting… we’ve already had some flip-flop bc they don’t know if Nutt is staying… I lived in Louisiana 15 years and used to make fun of LSU “fair-weather” attitudes…. I never thought I’d see such fickle fans at AR…. I bleed RAZORred… thick and thin
