Getting off Tobacco Road?

Either somebody has loose lips or he’s making up lies. There’s no other explanation for why Butch Davis‘ name keeps popping up in connection with the Arkansas football coaching job that is currently filled (and has been for the last 10 years).

But because the rumors have spread so quickly, Davis is already trying to quash them.

Usually when there is smoke there is fire. So expect the speculation to continue.

  1. […] The world of college coaching often seems as gossipy as your average group of junior high girls. In what I’m quite sure won’t be the last rumor to swirl around the Arkansas program in the coming months, there’s suddenly a lot of speculation around UNC coach (and Arkansas native) Butch Davis becoming the next Head Hog (no matter that the position technically isn’t vacant). It’s gotten to the point where he’s already issuing the standard non-denial denials (perhaps on the advice of noted truthteller Slick Nick Saban). The Slophouse blog has the story on this. […]

  2. interesting. i wouldn’t blame butch for wanting to get outta chapel hill. nc is and always will be a basketball school and football is an ugly stepchild, on a good day. i’m not sure why he took the job to begin with. regardless, UA could attract many big time coaches with its facilities and tremendous, statewide fan support. GO HOGS!

  3. Anything to do with UA lately has to do with lies.Starting with the Springdale group that was lied to.Ever since then the truth from the hill has been tarnished.Everyone knows Nutt and Broyles lieD to Gus and the players he brought with him.So pathetic
that a great school like UA has such lowdown SOBs for coaches. If Nutt is here next yr. he better hire some help to protect his butt because it will be on the line

  4. Jeesh …. can we give it a rest. Tossing around threats (speaking of lowdown sobs), and repeated unfounded, heresay statements does little for the creditability of the post. Let’s try this - get some facts, share those with the rest of us, then try providing an intelligent post about something useful. What happened with Gus and his boys is yesterday’s news.

For example - With Gus in Tulsa, Arkansas has a higher scoring avg per game than Gus has with his new team. Oh, and Tulsa leads in turnovers, and is last in their conference in defense. I’m sure Gus is enjoying himself on a .500 team in a mid-level conference.

Oh.. by the way, tell me why Gus couldn’t get Mitch to come to Tulsa? Makes you ponder just who lied to whom to get who to go where?

  5. I actually have watched 2 Tulsa games this year. I thought they looked awesome at times and more dynamic than the hogs on offense. Last time I looked they had not scored under 21 points in any game and they have as good an overall record as anyone in their conference. Tulsa is averaging 37 points a game versus Ark 38 points per game. Tulsa’s lowest score for the season was 21 against (4)Oklahoma and Ark had 7 against Auburn. In fact, they are 4-3 which I believe is the same record as the hogs. Tulsa is 2-2 in their conference and the hogs are tied for last place at 1-3 in the SEC. Lastly, Tulsa is starting over with new coaches and not with a 10 year seasoned veteran coach. It’s true that the hogs have a overall tougher schedule but right now they are not winning against those opponents. Ark is beating opponents that Tulsa can beat. The Tulsa offense was pretty good in the games I watched. They have a better passing and catching game than Arkansas and they had some good runs as well. The problem with Tulsa is they score quickly and their defense can sometimes be on the field longer. I think Gus is doing his job but the defense could be better. They are only going to get better thats for sure.
