The Big Time

While in town to cover Arkansas’ 9-7 loss to No. 17 Auburn, Tommy Hicks of the Mobile Press-Register stopped by to talk to the Razorbacks’ new baskeball coach John Pelphrey, whose last stop was at South Alabama.

The theme of Hicks’ article is Pelphrey’s sudden ascension to the big time and the adjustments he has made in his life since he was hired by Arkansas in April.

Subtlety is no longer part of John Pelphrey’s life. Not these days. Not in this job. Not in this state. Not in this league. Not with this team. Not with these fans.

Everything he does — from driving his candy-apple red (that’s Razorback red) “company car,” an H2 Hummer with all the amenities, to sitting in his office in Bud Walton Arena that is larger than some student apartments, to signing autographs and “calling the Hogs” — shows that the former South Alabama basketball coach is livin’ large.

It’s not really a choice; it’s part of the job of being Arkansas’ new head basketball coach.

  1. hehe… nothing against stan, but i have a feeling that slackerball is over. this guy is eventually going to be a big time, college BB coach.

  2. Finally something to look forward to.. it’s not football and basketball.. “40 mins of Pel?” It sure beats watching our team struggle to score 50-60 points like like sure. Coach Pel looks to be the perfect fit for our system… Good Luck!

  3. Great to see some good things said about the UA.I think this team and style will do well this yr.I just can’t understand why Stan was fired after 2 winning seasons and Nutt is still here causing the state shame.I hope Long is open minded enough to fire Nutt or Nutt is smart enough(lmao) to quit.
