It’s because of the strange phenomenon that recruiting has become that we know who Devin Thomas is.

Twenty years ago, he’s be another senior in high school who excelled at playing football. But today, he happens to be known as a 5-10, 185-pound running back from San Antonio who committed to Arkansas earlier this year. Did I mention he can run the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds?

Well, word quickly got out last Saturday that Thomas broke his ankle during a game. And the local paper, the Express-News, has all the details about his injury…and his future.

It turns out Thomas’ father also broke his ankle when he was in high school.

“I had lost speed,” he said. “I just never could get back to the form where I was, and I was moved to defense. I never ran the ball again, but that’s how the wind blows. I will do my best to put Devin in a very extensive rehab program. My goal is to not let that happen to him because carrying the ball is his joy.”

Willie Thomas said his son remains firmly committed to Arkansas, despite rumors that the prep star may reconsider his other options. Here’s what Dad said:

“A man’s word is his bond. That’s something I learned from my father. He is committed to Arkansas. We’re making our travel plans with that in mind. The last thing I want is a big scandal and Devin appearing to look wishy-washy, because that can have a big effect on your character.”
