Down-graded

Ron Higgins is to SEC football what Chuck Klosterman is to pop culture. That means he is an authority on the subject. Higgins, who writes for the Memphis Commercial-Appeal and usually can be found at the stadium where the league’s biggest game of the week is taking place, took the time to give an overall report card for the conference.

And judging by his marks, it looks like Arkansas and Coach Houston Nutt will be required to have a parent-teacher meeting or stay after school with Higgins.

Higgins calls the Razorbacks the SEC’s biggest disappointment so far:

All the off-the-field public backstabbing in the offseason about Arkansas coach Houston Nutt over his alleged role in the transfer of hotshot quarterback Mitch Mustain to Southern California put a cloud over the program.

What’s even worse is that the vultures that have been waiting on the cliff to nibble away at Nutt now have the bait…Even with Darren McFadden and Felix Jones ranked among the nation’s top 10 rushers, Arkansas’ one-dimensional offense is going to get Nutt, who has been a good coach, fired. Either that, or he’ll resign. Win or lose, he just doesn’t want himself or his family to be subjected the daily abuse.

  1. I have made every effort to stay on Nutt’s bandwagon from the beginning and was never really a Mustain fan from the time he decommitted, early on. However, the one dimensional, horribly predictable offensive woes continue and for God’s sake, Houston, use some imagination and play to win - not to lose.

I remember [barely] the Stoerner days when it was attack, attack and more attack - by land and air. Balance. Incredibly, you guys have had the “balance” word on your wish list for years. There is no way Arkansas will ever win against a talented, balanced offense and defense minded team. See LSU, Florida, Wisconsin, USC…..

Throwing the football on third and 8, because you have to, is NOT a passing attack. A panic attack, perhaps. When the best running back in the country says we need to work on our passing, it speaks volumes. I am still on your bandwagon, man. But the wheels are starting to shake and wobble. I have a feeling that there are more than a few up and coming, young, creative minded coaches who would love to find a place with the facilities and fan support associated with the UA. Come on, dude. Show some real balance, open it up and get back into the attack mode. BEAT AUBURN.

  2. Now there are some comments that make sense. Well said, DWP007. I think I agree with you. I would hate to see Houston go, but I have to admit, it just seems to be more of the same on the running game and passing only when needed. Here’s to this weekend! I’m still rooting for my HOGS - no matter who their coach is! GO HOGS! Beat Auburn!

  3. I’m still rooting for my HOGS. Their coach does matter to me! With Nutt as their head coach, even with two talent running backs, a couple of NFL first-round draft pick prospects, Hogs team does not draw any respect from anyone, media, coaches, and even Hogs fans. Get respected, Hogs, Fire Nutt and his gang!

  4. I drank the kool-aid and accepted mediocrity until December of 2006, the day Damian Williams left the team. I started asking questions. I knew something was not right.

Then four weeks later, I was officially branded a “hater” by the “powers that be” because I dared question integrity, honesty, and trust.

The reality is, I love my Hogs, but I am fed up with mediocrity. I loved the Wishbone, and still do, would love to see it every now and then (2 or 3 times a game) just to pay homage to the past. Nevertheless, in today’s college football era, you have to have the best to be the best and when a team and state settle for mediocrity, then that is what they get and deserve.

I think Houston is an okay guy, but he is a mediocre coach in the SEC. If Houston is the best we can get to coach our HOGS, then we are worse off than I can imagine. To be the best, you have to have the best and we are not paying to play in that league yet. If we want better, we have to pay Nick Saban money to get the best.

When DMac and Felix leave next year, we are going to suck for three years. Houston is going to leave because the cupboards are bare. He is going to get out of Dodge before the door hits him in the butt. However, the door is closing on this chapter in Hog history.

  5. im trying to stick with nutt but every day it gets a little harder. i think casey dick is a bum and it wouldnt matter if we threw the ball on first or fourth his accuracy stinks his arm strength stinks and his decision making stinks. a couple of days ago a guy said that lee had destroyed casey as a qb but i never saw a qb to begin with. so in some ways it is nutts fault but he cant throw the ball for casey. where are our backup qbs why dont they get more chances. emert or nathan i dont care witch at this point. the casey experiment has gone on to long. go hogs.

  6. i moved from huntsville arkansas to columbus ohio about ten years ago every day i hear how great the buckeyes are and how the sec is overrated. well idont believe either of those. i do believe that nutt could learn a thing or ten from the buckeyes consistency. every year a few of my friends hope and prey that the buckeyes suck but every year they show up. sure they get more 5 star recruits than the hogs and more fours and so on. i tend to think the stars system is flawed just as the nfl draft has its flops. what is comes down to is the leaders the coaching staff. i love nutt but cant understand why we cant even out the offense. i also dont believe in herring this guy was supposed to be the best d coach in the country where is the proof did nc state have better athletes or was it the weak conference that made his bump and run man d look good hers a tip we stink at press coverage chris houston is in the nfl now reggie play zone every once in a while thats how we came back against alabama you have to change it up. i want to be on your side here guys but the hard headedness is a little bit played out. lets go hogs!
