Mitch Mustain is alive and well

Neil Young once sang that Elvis Presley is gone but he’s not forgotten. Among Arkansas fans, the same holds true for Mitch Mustain — the wunderkind quarterback who played for the Razorbacks last year before transferring to Southern California in the offseason.

Mustain’s name is popping up a lot lately, because USC starting quarterback John David Booty is hurt and Mark Sanchez is replacing him. Sanchez and Mustain are expected to compete for Booty’s job once he completes his eligibility at the end of this season. As of right now, Mustain is working on the Trojans’ scout team, enjoying life as a low-profile football player.

Apparently last year, he was constantly hounded by the paparazzi in Fayetteville and his “sycophantic” fans who waited outside the Broyles Complex with their faces pressed against the glass just to sneak a peek at him.

Life can be tough as an Arkansas quarterback. So to avoid the intense glare of the spotlight, the best option is to go to that quiet retreat in the middle of nowhere, a place called Los Angeles. At least, that’s what the Daily Trojan’s Andrew Fischer seemed to suggest two weeks ago.

Of course, what Fischer forgets to mention is that if Mustain does beat out Sanchez and becomes USC’s starting quarterback, the pressure on him is going to be enormous and the local cable access network called ESPN is going to be covering his practices.

The ultimate irony in Fischer’s article is that Mustain is supposedly at Southern Cal because he’s trying to blend in with the crowd and yet the reporter is profiling him because he’s Mitch Mustain. Obviously, Arkansans are not the only ones interested in this guy.

  1. Nothing against this kid, or his mother for that matter; however, I will be surprised if he ever takes the field for any significant playing time at SC. Sanchez is older, bigger physically, and also a 5-star quarterback coming out of high school. The Trojans apparently have another very talented, 5-star quarterback a year behind Mustain. It will be interesting. Good luck, Mitch. You may need it. Regardless, I am not much of a Trojan fan. Go hogs!

  2. It is going to be tough for Mitch, but the kid is a winner with a big time arm. Too bad things went down the way that they did. Without getting into it there is plenty of blame to go around on all accounts with his & Damien Williams departure. Mitch could have totally changed how Arkansas is perceived by passing high school QB’s. I am sure he will mature between now & the time (if that time comes) that he will be the poster QB for USC. GO HOGS!

  3. I hope that Mitch does well at USC after this redshirt year. I believe that, given the treatment of his coach/offensive coordinator, he had to leave Arkansas. What Arkansas is left is a quarterback that can’t run and hasn’t shown consistancy passing. Without options, the hog’s outstanding runningbacks face a stacked deck. Unfortunately, other quarterback and receiver prospects will look at the wrecked program and its leadership and want no part of it.

  5. Unless Mitch shows abilities that I never saw, I don’t think that he has a chance at USC. I was a very excited hog letterman awaiting the arrival of this great qb and passer, last year. I was invited to closed practices last year and was stunned at how poorly Mitch threw the ball and he continued the poor quality passing during the season. His ability to handle the spotlight and pressure is in question, too, in my humble but experienced opinion.
I wish him well but unless his “great arm” from his high school days shows up, his only action will be on the practice squad.
