Miles a Michigan Man?
Lloyd Carr’s days are numbered at Michigan. The Wolverines’ coach of the last 13 years is expected to be axed at the end of this year after an embarrassing loss to Appalachian State in the season opener. So who is likely to replace Carr?
The word on the street is that LSU coach Les Miles is the man Michigan wants. Miles has a love affair with the Maize and Blue that dates back to his days as a student in Ann Arbor. The New York Times has an interesting article today about Miles’ infatuation with Michigan. Even when Miles was at Oklahoma State, his players knew that he coveted the Wolverines’ head coaching position.
The former Oklahoma State lineman Sam Mayes recalled Miles as a smashmouth coach who fearlessly took on the longtime state power Oklahoma, beating the Sooners twice in four attempts. Mayes recalled a pregame speech in which Miles broke a chair against a wall in the student union to fire up the Cowboys before one of the victories over Oklahoma. “It was one of the most memorable moments of my life,” Mayes said. “It was like someone lit the room on fire.”
Mayes said he enjoyed playing for Miles, but still had a bad taste about Miles leaving Oklahoma State for L.S.U. in 2005 to replace Nick Saban. He said Miles revered Michigan so much that he viewed it as a “golden fleece” and “got down on one knee” in reverence when he talked about it.
“He was never an Oklahoma State Cowboy, and I don’t think that he’s an L.S.U. Tiger right now,” Mayes said without being asked about Michigan. “I think he’s always going to be a Michigan man. I don’t think he’ll be content until he gets to that point.”

Too bad Arkansas isnt that smart about replacing losing coaches.Herring,Nutt,Lee.What a joke.I guess this is what the fans want tho. They keep these losers around yr after yr.When will AR wake up????????????????
This stuff about Miles and Michigan is old news. Ever since the App State loss, we’ve known that Miles would be the prime target for Ann Arbor, especially if we have a great season. As much as I like Miles, I can understand a guy wanting to go back to the program he coached and played for (sort of like Nutt with Arkansas, except Miles has proven his worth in a top tier program). I don’t think the Times is too current when it comes to college football, we’ve been talking about this for a while. Miles would be the most logical choice for Michigan, it’s more a matter of does he want to leave a strong program in arguably the strongest conference, to go to a once-mighty program that is probably on the ropes only temporarily. My guess is that he’ll go, even if we manage to win the BCS, but with our talent returning, we shouldn’t have any problem getting a top notch replacement (and sorry, we don’t want Nutt).
Mr. Sabin,
Seriously, cut this crap out. First Auburn, now LSU. Is that what malcontent sports journalists, such as yourself, write about when the Arkansas program isn’t worth covering? Oh wait, its fun to light a fire somewhere else, huh?
Please, find some creativity and write about something else.

This is SEC news. And just so you know, I didn’t write the article about Miles. I thought it was interesting, so I put it on the blog. While this is an Arkansas-centric Web site, there are things that go on outside this state (believe it or not) that affect the Razorbacks program. And I will continue to post those items here.
In no way does it suggest that I don’t think Arkansas is worth covering. No matter how good or bad they do, the Razorbacks are always worthy of being covered. It’s why we have a blog devoted exclusively to Razorbacks sports.
Maybe now (if we’re lucky) Michigan will want Jim Harbaugh!
