So close, yet so far away
Let’s say you’re a star running back and you’re probably the best player in college football. The team you play for, though, just isn’t that great. In fact, its championship dreams are virtually shot at this point. Does that affect your chances to win the Heisman Trophy?
The answer is yes, according to an article that appeared on USA Today’s Web site.
There has been only one player who has won the coveted award in the last 20 years and has played on a team that finished with more than two losses. Want to guess who it is? Ricky Williams, who took home the trophy in 1998 despite the fact that Texas could only manage an 8-3 record that year.
Tough to be Arkansas’ Darren McFadden right now.

When Nutt ran off Malzaun.Mitch and Damian he doomed Darren. Now he has no offensive coach,no QB and no wide recievers. We had the team to win the national championship and have a heisman winner this yr.So sad.Nutts last yr or the fans will revolt.
Hopefully he can change that statistic with top-notch performances in every game. I know that history isn’t on his side but his abilities are definitely on his side. He’s one of a kind and it will be a shame if he doesn’t win.
I agree 100% with Pigaholic……
Gamblersob…you said “We had the team to win the national championship and have a heisman winner this yr.” Are you serious??? Regardless of Malzahn, Mitch and Damian, do you not remember that we lost the biggest backbone of our defense in Jamal, Chris Houston, Butu, Jackson and others and without them there was no way we would even sniff a national championship let alone the conference. Malzahn, Mitch and Damian are not the difference, it is lack of experience and depth on the defensive side of the ball…wake up!!!
Also….DMac can still win the Heisman this year with great statistics and provided we only lose 1 more. Remember, we play in the SEC, the toughest conference in America and the voter recognize that along with the fact that if we have a good record that it will be because of him because without him we struggle. Just look at Bama game. Also, is it more or did we finish with 3 loses during the regular season and DMac’s votes actually went up from basically the Tennessee game on. It’s not over boys!!!
I hope for DMac’s sake it isn’t over, but when the big boys in the press start talking about others, it doesn’t look too good. Corso didn’t even have DMac in his top five. McFadden is going to have to run wild in these next two games, and then hope that Auburn isn’t so far off the radar that a great game against the Tigers will get him back into contention.
Here is the problem that McFadden faces: The less and less relevant Arkansas becomes relevant on the national scene, the less television exposure McFadden will get. Arkansas’ games will stop being aired nationally and as a result the media will have less of an opportunity to see him. This is why these early defeats hurt his chances to take home the trophy.
