RB Smith suspended after arrest

Arkansas’ third-string running back Michael Smith was arrested Sunday on felony charges of forgery and theft by receiving. The 5-7, 174-pound sophomore was booked at 3:49 p.m. at the Washington County Detention Center and is scheduled to have a court hearing Sept. 26.

“I have suspended Michael Smith for actions off the field that are clearly not acceptable for anyone, especially a member of this team,” Arkansas coach Houston Nutt said Sunday. “I am extremely disappointed that he made a decision that reflects poorly on him and the Razorbacks. He has been suspended indefinitely. He will not play this weekend and additional actions will be considered after we have an opportunity to fully review the situation.”

Smith, 20, used a credit card that was alleged to be stolen in order to make three transactions at two different gas stations over the weekend. Purchases totaled $96.34.

The report stated that Smith denied knowing the card was stolen. He told officers that the card was given to him by a friend to pay back a debt, and that if he had known the card was stolen he would not have used it, the report stated.

Smith has rushed 16 times for 91 yards this season. In the Razorbacks’ 42-29 loss to No. 21 Kentucky on Saturday, he carried the ball five times for 24 yards, but lost a fumble that was returned 66 yards for a touchdown by the Wildcats’ Trevard Lindley in the second quarter.
