Down with Saban

I know every yay-hoo with a “Tide Pride” t-shirt out there in Alabama is excited about the Tide’s new head coach, Nick Saban. Well, I’m not.

I wasn’t crazy about the way he left the Miami Dolphins in a lurch. I didn’t like his attitude when he was at LSU. I was barely aware of his existence at Michigan State. I could go on and on like this.

Anyway, Slick Nick just rubs me the wrong way for some reason. He’s a fine football coach (though horribly overpaid at this point), but I think the Crimson Tide faithful have let their expectations get a little out of control.

I don’t see Saban miraculously leading this team to an SEC title this year. In a couple of years, maybe.

It should be a good gauge of how much the Tide have improved under Saban tomorrow when the No. 16 Razorbacks come calling to Bryant-Denny Stadium. I’m lookig for one of those old-fashined slobber-knockers.

  1. Saban, just had to be on the sidelines. With a stupid, stubborn Houston Dale on the other side you just know he is going to find a way to lose. Why run the third string running back on the last offence drive of the game. Houston and George W. Bush are just alike, too stupid to be in the jobs that they have.

  2. Joe,

What dope do you smoke? Nick Saban is a SMART coach. Taking the field goal with four minutes to go, no McFadden and a two dimensional defense that his QB cleaned our clock with everytime Herring called for a safety blitz was all Saban needed for a victory, not to mention the hole we had dug at the end of the first quarter (21-0). My bet is on the fact that although Jeff Long will not take full reign of being AD until 1/1/08, he’s taking notes.

You mean Houston NUTT? Who’s stupid there? I do think Nutt has to go and soon, but the prez was so dumb he got elected twice. I don’t agree with him very much, but the American people are smart enough not to elect ultra libs Kerry and Ozone Al Gore, who by the way was instrumental in helping America’s enemy Iran ship weapons to the Bosnian MOSLEMS. That’s treason. Al and all Dimocrats still think negotiating with Iran will serve a purpose. It hasn’t yet. The solution for Iran’s nuclear amibitions is to airmail them some of our tactical penetrating nukes and make Iran nuke facilities glow for 10,000 years. Our arsenal is very costly and WORTHLESS if we are afraid to use it to DESTROY the enemy.
As far as the Hogs go, which won’t be far with Nutt in charge, Saturday again proved they are the best rushing team in the country, McFadden is the best running back ever, they can come back from the dead because of Darren, but they have no QB in Dick, Reggie Fish is still a liability that cannot catch a cold, a pass or a punt (remember the fumbled punt last year against LSU that cost us the game?), Nutt still makes bonehead decisions at critical times, Frank still does not have the balls to fire him, terrible defense, stupid penalties, no disipline. Marvin Harrison should be removed from the team (he drew a dumbass penalty in the 4th…dud…he is a dumbass and he belongs in jail), along with the no-class tackle that clobbered the Tide player with his own helmet Saturday. The Hogs played great for about a quarter and a half, but could not manage to get a first down and kill the clock…pitiful playcalling and execution. The last Bama drive the defense SUCKED.

Hire Jimmy Johnson Monday. Rest McFadden even if we need him against Kentucky. Concussions are nothing to fool with. The kid played his heart out. It was a Heisman performance. Too bad NUTT can’t win the big ones. He has got to go now.

Get help. Saban is great. NUTT still sucks.

  5. Darren

If you don’t win the Heisman, thank NUTTjob Houston. You deserve the award and a better coach. Awesome performance against Alabama. Get well soon.

  6. I think I agree with Joe. I have a problem with Saban mainly because he’s only as loyal until the next big check comes along. No thanks. There’s a word for ya’ - loyalty. Don’t see much from some of you so-called HOG fans these days. I choose to support my team - the coach who coaches my team, more than I can say for some of you ya-hoo’s. I think it’s silly to blame it all on the coach. I think our team made some mistakes, but overall, played a great football game. It’s not always gonna go our way. Is Saban brillant? Heck no! Was Alabama a better team - H*** NO! I hope our team doesn’t read all your negative comments, otherwise, they might as well just hang it up for the season! Go HOGS, Beat Kentucky!

  7. Hog Fans,
As a Bama guy, I’ve always had the utmost respect for you and your program, even going back to the days of Lou Holtz as your head coach. Ditto for AD Frank Broyles. Nobody could call an Alabama-Auburn game like Frank Broyles and Keith Jackson. Anyway, I think you’ve always had a class program. As far as the game Saturday night goes, I was a little disappointed with Mitchell (I think it was) swinging the helmet, but outside of that, it was a great game. I can’t remember a game where so many guys helped their opponents up, play after play after play, on BOTH sides. I can’t believe we let a 3 touchdown lead get away (twice), but DMc & Felix’s 300 yards just wore us down. Two days later it’s easy to see why DMc was on the sideline on the last drive (slight concussion). Anyway, the only other comment I wanted to make is about Coach Saban. A man is entitled to a mistake or two. Lord knows I’ve made my share. Coach Saban’s mistake was being lured away from LSU for a pro job. (See Steve Spurrier to the Redskins, Ray Perkins to the Bucs etc. etc.) The situation in the pros is that it really is just a paycheck to the boys in the NFL. Alabama’s job happened to be open and was one of the few that he would have left the pro’s for. Will he hang around awhile? I don’t know. If another job comes open and he wants it, I would guess that it would be his choice to make. He took such a beating by the media for this one (undeservedly so I must add, because without our AD Mal Moore selling him after the Dolphins season ended, I really believed Nick when he said he wouldn’t be the next Alabama coach three weeks earlier.) Hopefully he can be happy in T-town until he hangs up his coaching hat, and I for one would love to see him hang around awhile. Anyway, best of luck to all of you and the Hogs this year and every year (as long as you aren’t playing Bama). I’d really like to see y’all punish a few more teams in the SEC west like you did us (AU and LSU especially). Take care and good luck to you all, Rick

  8. I imagine myself needing a shower after meeting Mr. Saban, that guy is just a real slime.

The hogs comeback saturday night took a lot of talent, but it also took the same amount of character. That was instilled in them by there coaches throughout their playing careers, and also here at the U of A by the coaches on Houston Nutt’s staff.
