Stable of receivers may be best group ever for Purple Dogs
Fayetteville doesn’t have a Gionni Harris but it has a more receivers who can contribute on Friday night than possibly any group in school history.
Seniors Coy Holmes and Kellen Summers, junior Josh Hale and sophomore Demetrius Dean give Daryl Patton’s Purple Dogs the speed and the brawn as the starting four wideouts for receivers coach Drew Yoakum. Patton said seniors Franco Broyles, Bobby Petrino, Steven Shelton, Zack Yocum and Alex Miller, junior Quentin Smith and sophomores Troy Underwood and Colby Jordan are all also capable receivers.
“We’ve got about 10 kids who play on Friday night and the quality depth is as good as we’ve ever had,” Patton said. “What we don’t have is a 4.4 [-second, 40-yard dash] speed guy or a home-run hitter. But I will take a Summers, Holmes or Petrino. Those guys are very good high school football players.”
And the big-bodied tandem of Hale and Dean are hard to bring down.
“Dean’s a match-up problem for a lot of people,” Patton said. “He’s not going to beat people with his speed, although he’s definitely not slow. He’s just strong with great hands and does a great job of body positioning. He’s going to be a tough kid to single cover for any team. Josh Hale is another big target with great hands. Against Shiloh it was third and 12 and Brandon Allen steps up and hits Josh on a dig route for about 16 yards. The guy was all over Josh and he made the catch. In the past we’ve had speed, whereas now we’ve got really good size and pretty good speed.”
