Local soccer team heading to Sweden

BENTONVILLE - The Northwest Arkansas Lightning'95 Black Girls soccer team will depart for Stockholm, Sweden, on July 23 to participate in a series of friendly matches against Swedish soccer clubs before participating in the P 18 Cup or "Tjecuppen," which will take place on the Swedish island of Gotland.

In the P 18 Cup, the Lightning will compete against teams from all over Europe.

The'95 girls finished their regular season in May with a 55-9-4 record and won their second consecutive Arkansas State President's Cup in the Under 13 division. They also extended their streak of not incurring a loss or allowing a goal at the President's Cup for the second consecutive year.

The team qualified for the President's Cup Regional Tournament in Columbus, Ga., but opted not to participate to prepare for its trip to Sweden.

The team is comprised of players from Bentonville, Rogers, Springdale, Fayetteville and Fort Smith.

Team members from Bentonville include Tayler Estrada, Taylor Lee, Lauren Powers, Lauren Cowgur, Paulina Doubleday, Paige Theilbar, and Madison Sanders.

Players from Rogers include Hope Burrell, Allie Johnson, Ali Dougherty, Megan Johnson, Kate Schmandt, Ellen Lundy, Julie Whitlow, Ashley Collier Taylor Ward (Fayetteville ), Sydney Walker (Fort Smith ) and Springdale players Sara LaChance and Emma Gartner also are on the team.

The'95 girls, who are coached by Doug Estrada and assisted by Mark Burrell, won championships in seven of the nine tournaments they played in this season.
