BENTONVILLE — The Benton County Meth Task Force will kick off its monthlong methamphetamine awareness and prevention campaign at noon Wednesday at the Benton County Courthouse.

County Judge Gary Black will read a proclamation declaring October as Methamphetamine Awareness and Prevention Month in Benton County. This is the fifth year for the anti-methamphetamine campaign.

Methamphetamine Awareness Month is coordinated by the Benton County Meth Task Force, a subcommittee of Drug Free Rogers-Lowell, at the Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce.

Benton County Prosecutor Van Stone will be the master of ceremonies for the event.

More than 100 sixth-graders from Old High Middle School will take part in the kickoff. Congressman John Boozman, R-Ark.; Sen. Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark.; and Sen. Mark Pryor, D-Ark., will have representatives on hand to make a special presentation to Drug Free Rogers-Lowell concerning funding for the next five years.

Also participating and attending the proclamation ceremony will be area police chiefs and mayors; members of the Benton County Quorum Court, the Benton County Methamphetamine Task Force and Drug Free Rogers-Lowell; police force representatives; community business leaders; and other officials.

Following the proclamation, there will be a cookout at Dave Peel Park in Bentonville, weather permitting, for the public.

Any organization that would like to have a presentation about meth during October may call Megan Cuddy at 619-3188.
