BENTONVILLE - It's probably a good thing that not all of Northwest Arkansas Community College's alumni visited campus Saturday for the kick-off event for the college's alumni association.
It might have been a little crowded.
There are an estimated 44, 000 people who have college credit classes at the college in its 19 years of business. Some have taken only one class, some took pre-requisites for a four-year degree and others graduated with an associate degree or certificate, said Jim Hall, director of public relations. Although there weren't thousands of people who attended the alumni association's first event, there was still a pretty good crowd, said Becky Hudson, alumni coordinator.
The event was designed to create awareness that the new alumni association had been created, she said. It included live music, picnic food, prizes and information about the association.
"We want to bring back our alumni to help further the college's mission," she said.
Alumni are being sought for all kinds of volunteer work including helping during registration, recruiting and also mentoring students. The NWACC Alumni Association will also be a way for alumni to network and reconnect to old friends.
Scott and Sheila Hall have both earned various certificates at the college and are working towards earning more credits. They attended the event to support the college and to get more information about the fledgling association.
"We like NWACC and wanted to support it," Scott Hall said.
Although she's the coordinator for the alumni association and therefore a college employee, Hudson sees the value of the association also from an alumna's perspective.
"I am an alumni and I see this as an opportunity to help future students," she said. "If it had not been for NWACC I would not have gone to college."
