DECATUR — Academy Industries of Gentry will provide the city of Decatur with a free recycling program.
Academy Industries employs Ozark Adventist Academy students to pick up and sort recyclable materials as part of a work-study program. It allows teenagers to learn responsibility and help pay their school tuition, according to the program’s brochure.
Recycling bins have been set up at City Hall, and more bins will be placed near the city swimming pool. Residents may drop off recyclable materials 24 hours a day, free of charge.
Paper, plastic and metal materials are accepted, including newspapers, copy paper — both in sheets and shredded — junk mail, card stock, brown and white cardboard, magazines, brochures and phone books. Plastic drink bottles, detergent containers, plastic bags and milk jugs, as well as scrap metal, steel cans and aluminum cans, are also accepted.
The program does not accept Styrofoam, rubber or glass. Paper and plastic materials should be sorted and tied up in plastic bags, such as shopping bags, then put in the properly marked bin. Academy students will empty the bin once a week or more often if needed.
Decatur businesses can request free recycle bins at their locations to cut down on the cost of waste pickup services.
