Benefit auction set for Saturday

BENTONVILLE — Trying to treat a rare medical condition without health insurance is a monumental challenge. It’s what faces Sherry L. Smith every day.
Smith was diagnosed with Kommerell’s diverticulum, a congenital abnormality of the aortic arch, and had surgery to repair the condition. However, she continues to be unable to swallow solid foods. For more than eight months, Smith hasn’t been able to swallow normally. She has lost more than 100 pounds and loses more weight each week.
“ I’ve seen such an outpouring of love from the whole community when they learned about me, ” Smith said. “ There’s no way they can imagine how much I appreciate them. People at my church, friends and people I don’t even know have been so caring. For their gifts, their time and especially their prayers, I thank them. People are wonderful. ”
Naomi Allen, Smith’s friend, has organized a benefit auction to be held Saturday at the Bentonville National Guard Armory. People have donated a number of items to be auctioned. From furniture and bicycles to golf clubs and glassware, there seems to be merchandise that will appeal to everyone.
Tickets to win a handcrocheted 6-foot by 5-foot tablecloth — created by Gwen Duncan over a year’s time — will be available at the auction. The drawing for the tablecloth will be held next month.
Smith will be on hand at the benefit auction. Held at the National Guard Armory at 810 S. W. A St. in Bentonville, the auction will begin at 10 a. m. Saturday. Cody Barlow will be the auctioneer.
For more information, call Naomi Allen at 451-1586.
