Twist of Green Festival Upcoming

BENTONVILLE - The Education Committee of the Multi-Basin Regional Water Council will coordinate participation by some of its member organizations in an upcoming festival. But the council won't have a booth of its own at the upcoming event, the council's board of directors decided Friday. The council is a not-forprofit organization of organizations, aimed at educating the public and its members on environmental issues, including water quality, water conservation and watershed management, among others; and to increasing the capacity of member organizations to cooperate and fulfill their own missions. The council has subcommittees on education, organization, technical information and other topics. The event the directors heard about Friday was the upcoming Twist of Green Festival. Set Oct. 4 and 5, the festival will be presented by Sustainable Northwest Arkansas and the city of Fayetteville, said Charlotte Buchanan, a presenter of the planned event.
The inaugural event of Twist of Green Festival 2008 will be on the Fayetteville Square and will show sustainable resources and opportunities for research in the city, in the University of Arkansas and elsewhere, Buchanan said. The festival will present new information on cuttingedge sustainable practices, products, research and development, and education, she said.
The festival might be held elsewhere in the future, Buchanan told the council.
"You can be a rolling water road show," she said.
The best role for the council might be to coordinate participation by some of its member organizations, but not to participate in the event as the Multi-Basin Regional Water Council, council president Jim Gately said.
"It might be (best to provide ) a coordination of our entity groups. … Our coordination would make sure (for instance ) Beaver Water District is not doing the same thing (at the festival ) as ABLE (Association for Beaver Lake Environment ) does," Gately said.
The other directors agreed.
Also, board members decided to move the location of the council's planned Aug. 22 meeting from Webb City, Mo., to Benton County.
Bob Nichols, a Webb City resident and president of the Tri-State Water Resource Coalition, suggested the change. He'd like to see the council meet in Webb City someday, but didn't think the next meeting was the best time to do that, Nichols said.
At least for now, Benton County is a better location for most members considered most likely to attend, but the council will meet in Missouri and elsewhere in the future, board members decided.
The exact location of the Benton County meeting will be announced later, Gately said.
