ROGERS - A. G. Russell III, the owner of A. G. Russell Knives of Rogers, was honored at his company Monday by visiting dignitaries, including the secretary of the Army.
They came to honor Russell for a program he created, one that boosts morale of U. S. troops on duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The visitors included Pete Geren, secretary of the Army, who wrote a letter thanking Russell for his program; George Westmoreland, the civilian aide to the secretary of the Army; and U. S. Rep. John Boozman, R-Ark., the northwest Arkansas congressman, who is a member of the House Veterans Affairs Committee; and others.
Westmoreland had been seeking to honor Russell for his creation of the program, called War on Troop Boredom. So far, Russell; his wife, Goldie, the president of A. G. Russell Knives; and company staff members have sent thousands of care packages to U. S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The packages contain such items as books, CDs, magazines, a copy of the U. S. Constitution, field tweezers and, of course, knives.
The company, which has been sending the moraleboosting packages for more than three years, is always looking for new ways to support the troops, Boozman said shortly before Monday's ceremony.
"This business consistently shows its support for our American heroes serving overseas. It deserves to be recognized and honored for its efforts of providing comfort to our soldiers," he said.
