BENTONVILLE - The Benton County Democratic Women's Club will soon hear from Randall Woods, Ph. D.
He will talk about the growth of the military-industrial complex from the Vietnam era through the present war in Iraq, and the grip the fear of terrorism has on the citizens of the United States.
The "military-industrial complex"is an informal alliance of the military and related government departments with defense industries that is held to influence government policy.
The term was first used by outgoing U. S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower on Jan. 17, 1961. He said then: "In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex."
The club will meet at 11: 30 a.m. May 19 at the Clarion Hotel and Convention Center in Bentonville.
Woods, a John A. Cooper Distinguished Professor of History, has taught history at the University of Arkansas since 1971. He has been a Senior Fellow at the University of Arkansas' Fulbright Institute since 1986 and has authored many books.
He currently teaches a course on the Vietnam War at the university.
The public is invited to attend the meeting. Reservations for the buffet lunch may be made by calling Sharon Carter at 464-7531 by May 15. The cost of lunch is $ 10.
