Flooding doesn’t stop disc golfers

BENTONVILLE — Bentonville’s first disc golf course has endured some heavy rains and flooding since it opened in March.
Even though some areas are still wet, eager players are out on the course, wallowing through the mud and making their way around the still water to enjoy their favorite sport.
Chuck McAlllister of Bentonville helped develop the Lake Bella Vista Disc Golf Course, which opened March 22, just days after heavy rains inundated the area. McAllister is also a member of the Northwest Arkansas Disc Golf Association.
The club has had to cancel a couple of tournaments because of the rain, he said. But still, players head out in spite of the muddy waters. “ We just kind of deal with the elements; we just play to be playing, ” he said.
The Professional Disc Golf Association began its tournament season in March and typically ends in November, McAllister said. Those are the months that are typically best for the sport. “ I prefer this time of year when it’s still relatively cool. Other people won’t go out when it’s 30, 40, 50 degrees, but that’s when I’d rather go out and play, ” he said.
Although no additional tournaments are planned for Bentonville’s course this year, McAllister said he would like to see a twoday tournament come to the area — or possibly one in conjunction with courses in Springdale and Fayetteville.
