BENTON COUNTY - U. S. Sen. Mark Pryor, D-Ark., is working to add disaster relief to an upcoming Senate appropriation and to amend existing legislation about some moving companies, the senator said Wednesday.

He can't guarantee his state will get disaster relief, but having talked to hard-hit Arkansans, he knows the relief is needed and is working to get it, Pryor said.

"It looks like we're going to see another supplemental (appropriations bill ) come through the Senate sometime in the next few weeks. Obviously, with Arkansas being under water and having tornadoes and all the weather issues we've had in our state, we are looking for maybe using the supplemental to get Arkansas some disaster relief," Pryor said.

"We don't have any guarantees on that. But you can talk to farmers all over the state - especially if they had a wheat crop, or even fruit crops - depending on where they are and depending on what their individual situation has been; many of these people are having great losses, not to mention homes, small businesses, roads, bridges, etc., that have been damaged in these floods that we've seen in the recent weeks," he said.

Over the next few weeks, Pryor and other senators will be working to get the needed disaster-relief provisions included in the supplemental appropriations bills, he said.

Another pending amendment to the bill would change policy on a bill Pryor got passed in 2005, the senator said.
