A couple of weeks ago daylight savings time once again moved the handles on the face of the clock fast forward by one hour. We how have more sunshine to enjoy in the afternoon, at least until the fall back reset rolls back around.

As a reminder, it's a good time of year to change the batteries in your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector. Don't just push the button for a quick chirp. Take out the old battery and put in a new one. While your there, clean off the unit by removing any spider webs, old paint or other obstructions that would keep the unit from properly "sniffing "the air. Put everything back in place and then give the tester button a push to see if everything is in working order. Batteries are cheap, but the lives you may save are priceless.

With the added hour of daylight it would also be a good time to go out to the sidewalk or roadway in front of you home to see if the address numbers on your home are visible. If you can't see your house numbers in daylight and while standing still and not in "emergency mode," then how do you expect emergency personnel responding to an emergency in your home to be able to find the exact address where they have been called ?

A new battery or a quick lop or two with the lawn shears and your chances of coming out alive in a structure fire situation are improved many fold.
