DECATUR — Community members have generously donated more than 40 cows, as well as business services and other items, for an auction to help David Nelson with medical expenses.

Nelson, who owned the Gravette Meat Locker and recently opened Benton County Processing in Siloam Springs, was diagnosed with chronic lymphatic leukemia in December.

The Decatur Livestock Auction and Hoyt James Custom Dozing will hold the benefit — “ Beef for the Butcher” — at 2 p. m. April 12.

The James family is planning to roast a pig and host a potluck dinner. Dinner will be free for consignors and buyers, and will cost $ 5 for everyone else.

“ If we can do something to help someone, we will, ” Shawn Sperry said.

Sperry, along with Chris Buffer and Bobby Schaffer, owns the Decatur Livestock Auction.

Although they have never met Nelson, Sperry and his two partners will donate the use of their facility and their time to help with the auction. Buffer will be the auctioneer for the livestock.

Buyers will be able to choose from bred cows, bulls, calves, open cows and steers. In addition to the work Pam James has put into organizing the benefit, Hoyt James has donated two days of custom dozing to be auctioned to the highest bidder.

A 27-month-old purebred Charolais herd bull donated by Bud and Dena Edmondson of Edmondson Charolais Ranch will also be up for auction.

Bud Edmondson approached the Jameses about donating the bull. He has known Nelson and used his processing services for many years. “ David’s a good, hardworking guy, ” Edmondson said.

Some of the other items up for auction are four $ 25 gift certificates given by Dr. Desirea Self of the Gentry Veterinary Clinic and a truckload of automotive items and two marine batteries provided by Osbourn’s Automotive Store of Siloam Springs. Other items are still coming in.

To contribute, contact Hoyt or Pam James at 752-8278. Monetary donations may be to the David Nelson account at any area Arvest Bank.
