BENTONVILLE — William Isenhower is sick and tired of hearing about children who are abducted. He’s convinced he has developed a program that teaches even very young kids how to escape from a predator.

“ I’m a fourth-degree black belt, ” Isenhower explained. “ Jeffrey Schmidt who also works at my American Taekwondo Association Studio is a sixth-degree master. I opened last November and have about 80 students now. We have all ages and abilities. We can teach anyone. We can even teach people in wheelchairs ways to defend themselves. ”

Isenhower said he believes his job is to educate parents and kids about predators. Along with learning ways to protect themselves, students also stay healthy and fit through the active moves of Taekwondo. Students range from three years old to 99.

“ Even a 3-year-old can deliver a powerful punch or kick, ” Isenhower said. “ We can teach them how to get away from someone. We also teach about when to call 9-1-1 for help. We make it clear that the number must never be called unless there’s a real emergency.

“ I’ve talked to P. E. classes at Mary Mae Jones Elementary, Central Park Elementary and Old High Middle schools in Bentonville. My goal is to reach all the area schools to raise awareness about abductions and stranger danger. We have developed a method to teach children without causing them to be afraid of people. ”

Another big bonus students receive is better grades and higher self-esteem. Parents of students enrolled report their children are eager to help at home and become leaders at school.

“ Part of our program involves life skills — attitudes, goal setting, courtesy, respect and integrity, ” said Isenhower. “ The children keep a Good Habits worksheet. Adult students feel more confident and able to defend themselves. ”
