BELLA VISTA — The Bella Vista Property Owners Association is accepting used cell phones to donate to a nonprofit organization that helps soldiers call home, according to a POA news release.

Cell Phones for Soldiers is a program that helps soldiers serving overseas call their loved ones. The program was founded in April 2004 by 13-year-old Brittany Bergquist and her 12-year-old brother, Robbie, of Norwell, Mass.

The program collects and recycles used cell phones in order to purchase calling cards to distribute to soldiers around the globe.

Cell phones will be accepted at the POA’s Membership Services Department, 101 Town Center West, as well as at Riordan Hall and the Branchwood Recreation Center. Phones may be dropped off in one of the marked boxes.

The POA will pay the postage on all of the cell phones mailed in to ensure that more money goes toward the calling cards.

The group will accept all cell phones, even those that do not work. Batteries, chargers and accessories are not required but will be accepted.

The idea was suggested by Beverly Hollums, an employee in the POA Accounting Department, POA General Manager Tommy Bailey said.

“ We have a great group of employees who are always looking for ways to give back, ” Bailey said.
