SPRINGDALE - A dozen members of the Pride of the Ozarks Barbershop Chorus made educational presentations at J. O. Kelly Middle School in Springdale on Monday.
Participating were: Pete Anderson, Springdale; Gale Demaree, Nate Leonhard and Jack Mase, Bentonville; Lee Flickinger, Dick Holt, Mike Michelsen, Jim Nugent, Rob Sabata and Chet Sautter, Bella Vista; Dave Rowe, Gravette and Bryce Hopkins, Fayetteville.
The group addressed six classrooms of seventh grade students of Denise Parkhurst - a total of approximately 160 students. Each presentation was done by a Very Large Quartet, which varied in size and composition as some members left and others arrived during the day.
Parkhurst asked her students to practice concert etiquette as an objective of the class. Other objectives included taking special notice of the expressive faces of the performers and thinking about the careers of the men as each introduced himself.
Each man indicated the importance of vocal music in his life and emphasized that sing can be a lifelong recreational activity. This was the second consecutive year that Pride of the Ozarks has made educational presentations at J. O. Kelly.
"Zip a Dee Doo Dah "and "My Wild Irish Rose"were used to demonstrate characteristics of the barbershop style. Students sang along to "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean, " "Take Me Out to the Ball Game"and "I've Been Working on the Railroad."
The students also enjoyed singing tags (codas ) with the barbershoppers. Directed by Parkhurst, each class took the opportunity to sing some of their own repertoire with the barbershop chorus members as audience.
