John David Reed will serve 10 days.
BENTONVILLE — A Benton County man began serving his 10-day jail sentence Tuesday for shooting two dogs — killing one and injuring the other.
John David Reed, 27, pleaded guilty to animal cruelty, a class A misdemeanor. The plea came under an agreement that Reed’s attorney was able to reach with a deputy prosecutor.
In January 2006, Reed shot the two dogs. One was killed and the other had to have its leg amputated, according to previous reports. Reed had complained about dogs getting into his garbage, according to previous reports.
Reed pleaded guilty Aug. 9, and Benton County West District Judge Jeff Conner accepted the plea agreement.
Conner placed Reed on probation for one year and ordered him to pay $ 100 in court costs, a $ 400 fine and $ 2, 000 in restitution to the owner of the dogs.
Reed was sentenced to 30 days in the Benton County Jail, but 20 days were suspended on the condition that Reed pays restitution and any other costs involved, and has no more problems within his probationary period.
