Conference to focus on myths, realities about Latino community in the area

WASHINGTON COUNTY — The Hispanic Women’s Organization of Arkansas and the University of Arkansas’ Office of Admission will hold the sixth annual conference “ Latinos in Arkansas: Redefining Community — Myths and Reality” Sept. 16 at the UA Department of Continuing Education in Fayetteville.

The conference will focus on myths and realities of changing demographics as they relate to the Latino community in Arkansas. The keynote speaker will be Randy Capps, a senior research associate at The Urban Institute. Capps is a demographer with expertise in integration of immigrants and their children. He is lead investigator for a study of immigrants in the Arkansas labor force funded by the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation.

The conference is sponsored in part by Wal-Mart, Tyson Foods, Cox Communications, the UA Office of Admission, the UA Continuing Education and the UA Multicultural Center.

The conference will also feature Hispanic art and music.
