ROGERS — A Bentonville police officer who pleaded guilty to drunken driving last month in Rogers will be retiring from the police force at the end of the month.

Lt. Dale Shastid was sentenced this week in Rogers District Court after pleading guilty in December to driving under the influence after an accident on Dec. 15, 2004. He will pay $300 in court costs and $450 in fines; receive a 14-day suspended jail sentence contingent upon no similar offenses for one year; work several days of public service; and comply with substance recommendations from Ozark Guidance.

Bentonville Police Chief James Allen said Shastid, who joined the force in 1978, is fully eligible for retirement and turned in his one-month notice in December to be in compliance with department regulations. Shastid has been working while his case was pending in the courts. Allen said he couldn’t speculate whether Shastid would have been fired or asked to resign from the force for the drunken-driving offense if he hadn’t retired instead. "It’s a moot point,"Allen said. "He’s retired, so there’s no use discussing what I would have done."
