NATIONAL LEAGUE : Sabathia continues to help Brewers, shuts out Cards

ST. LOUIS — CC Sabathia pitched a three-hitter, his third consecutive complete game for his new team, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-0 on Wednesday night.
Ryan Braun had four hits, lacking a double for the cycle, and J. J. Hardy hit his 14 th home run for the Brewers, who have won seven consecutive. Milwaukee won the first three games of this four-game, limiting the Cardinals to six runs.
The Brewers have homered in 19 consecutive games, tying the franchise record set in 1996, and have 30 home runs in that stretch.
Hardy, who is 8 for 14 in the series, hit his first home run since July 10 with one out in the fifth off Braden Looper (9-8 ) for the first run.
A single, a hit batter and Rickie Weeks’ sacrifice fly off Kelvin Jimenez made it 2-0 in the sixth and Braun homered off Jason Isringhausen leading off the ninth.
Sabathia (4-0 ) matched his career best for hits allowed with his third career three-hitter and 22 nd complete game.
He struck out seven and walked two. The 6-7, 290-pound left-hander has won all four starts since the Brewers acquired the 2007 AL Cy Young winner from the Cleveland Indians. He has won seven consecutive decisions overall in his past nine starts. PIRATES 8, ASTROS 7 Jason Bay hit a two-run home run as visiting Pittsburgh handed Houston its fourth consecutive loss. REDS 9, PADRES 5 Adam Dunn hit his eighth grand slam as host Cincinnati beat San Diego. The Padres’ Greg Maddux, 42, is 0-5 with 9 no-decisions in his past 14 starts. Maddux, who has 350 career victories and is 3-8 this season, left with a 3-2 lead in the sixth. Bronson Arroyo (9-7 ) won his fifth consecutive start. METS 6, PHILLIES 3 Jose Reyes’ three-run home run broke a sixth-inning tie as host New York beat Philadelphia to create a first-place tie in the NL East. BRAVES 9, MARLINS 4 Chipper Jones strained his left hamstring running out a groundout in the fourth inning and Tim Hudson (11-7 ) left after six innings with tightness in his right elbow as Atlanta beat host Florida. ROCKIES 5, DODGERS 3 Matt Holliday drove in two runs, including one on a double that bounced off the pitcher’s glove, as host Colorado beat Los Angeles.
American League ANGELS 14, INDIANS 11 Jeff Mathis had four hits with a career-high six RBI, including his first grand slam in the majors and a two-run double, Casey Kotchman had a career-best five hits, and Howie Kendrick had four hits, tied a franchise record with three doubles, drove in three runs and scored three as host Los Angeles beat Cleveland. It was the first time three Angels players each had four or more hits in the same game. John Lackey (8-2 ) allowed 6 runs and 8 hits in 5 innings. The six runs were the most allowed by Lackey in any of his 77 career victories. Francisco Rodriguez got his major league-leading 42 nd save. TIGERS 7, ROYALS 1 Rookie Armando Galarraga, 26, carried a perfect game into the seventh and Miguel Cabrera had three RBI as Detroit beat host Kansas City. Galarraga (8-4 ) retired the first 18 batters before David DeJesus led off the seventh with a single to right on a full-count pitch. To that point, Galarraga had allowed just two fly balls to the outfield and struck out six. He allowed a run in the seventh on three singles and a walk, but left the bases loaded. Galarraga finished with a career-high seven strikeouts and one walk. WHITE SOX 10, RANGERS 8 Carlos Quentin hit two home runs, including the go-ahead, three-run shot in a five-run eighth as host Chicago overcame an 8-4 deficit and beat Texas. Quentin’s go-ahead home run came on the first pitch from Rangers closer C. J. Wilson, who entered in relief of Eddie Guardado with two on and two out. YANKEES 5, TWINS 1 Mike Mussina (13-6 ) gave up six hits in eight innings, retiring 14 of the first 17 batters and walking none for the third consecutive start as New York won its 10 th consecutive at home and fifth in a row overall, beating Minnesota, which has lost four consecutive. RAYS 4, ATHLETICS 3 James Shields (9-6 ) improved to 5-1 in his past six starts, pitching into the ninth as host Tampa Bay beat Oakland, which has lost 7 of 8. RED SOX 6, MARINERS 3 Mike Lowell hit a two-run single off Sean Green in the 12 th and Boston took advantage of two outfield errors to beat host Seattle.
