100 YEARS AGO July 18, 1908 MEMPHIS — Having no money but wishing to see his sister, who is in a local convent, Leo Gibson, 10 years old, walked from Helena to West Memphis, nearly 100 miles, then swam the Mississippi River and was taken in hand by police, who will return him to his parents in Arkansas, after allowing the game youngster to spend a few days with his sister.
50 YEARS AGO July 18, 1958 WASHINGTON — The new commander of United States forces in the Lebanon area is a courtly, poetry-quoting native of Fort Smith. Admiral James L. Holloway Jr. left a desk job in London to put on one of his four hats as commanderin-chief in the Middle East. Holloway also is commanderin-chief in the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean, naval component commander of United States forces in Europe and commander of the subordinate command of the United States Atlantic Fleet. 25 YEARS AGO July 18, 1983 Pulaski County has paid settlements and judgments totaling $ 26, 500 since November to seven former sheriff’s deputies who had sued Sheriff Tommy Robinson for allegedly firing them wrongfully. The county paid them from the general fund. Two suits by four former deputies are still pending.
10 YEARS AGO July 18, 1998 Thousands of fans and onlookers greeted President Clinton when he landed Friday afternoon at Little Rock Air Force Base to begin a three-day vacation that will include state campaign fundraising and golf. A crowd, estimated at 4, 000 gathered in the shade of Hangar 250 on the Jacksonville base before being shepherded onto the tarmac about 15 minutes before the president’s arrival at 1: 56 p.m. “I’m delighted to be back home,” Clinton said from a podium where he was flanked by Rep. Vic Snyder and Secretary of Transportation Rodney Slater.
