Events planned on shortage of teachers on state’s east side
Posted on Wednesday, January 31, 2007
The Arkansas Department of Education will host teacherrecruitment events Feb. 15-16 at Mid-South Community College in West Memphis to address a shortage of teachers in eastern Arkansas, according to an agency news release.
The events include an education-career fair from 10 a. m. to 2 p. m. on Feb. 16 for anyone interested in an education career in eastern and southeast Arkansas. Representatives of colleges and school districts will answer questions and offer guidance on how to become qualified to teach. School district representatives will accept applications for jobs that are open in their public school systems.
The day before the career fair, a workshop for school district recruiters on how to attract highly qualified teachers is set for 1-4 p. m. Feb. 15. A reception will follow from 5: 30-7: 30 p. m., giving area business and civic leaders an opportunity to talk with educators about how they can help meet the needs of local schools and colleges.
“This shortage has not come upon us suddenly; neither will it be resolved overnight,” Ken James, Arkansas commissioner of education, said in a news release. “The Arkansas Department of Education wants to alleviate this problem, but we know we will not be able to find solutions without community input and support.”
More information about the events is available by contacting Christina Villareal, the Education Department’s teacher-recruitment coordinator, at (501 ) 682-5535.
