WHAT: Emerald Breakfast On-the-Go Trail Mix STATS: A serving of the Breakfast Blend contains 120 calories and 4 1 / 2 fat grams.
THE SKINNY: I’ve already done the somewhat misleading math so you don’t have to: One hungry shopper plus one new box of seemingly low-calorie (only 120 !) trail mix pouches equals excitement ! Subtract the reality that there are actually two servings of the stuff (and therefore 240 calories ) per individual pouch and it equals a whole lot of bitterness.
We’ve had it with pretend portion-control products. If a food comes in an individual, portable package that any reasonable person would assume is one serving, said package should tell the full Nutrition Facts story. If you give us a 2 1 / 4-ounce bag, provide us the fat grams, etc., for that amount, not a mere 1-ounce serving.
Luckily I found the Breakfast Blend flavor of the trail mix — featuring apple chips, dried cranberries, glazed walnuts, glazed almonds, yogurt raisins and granola clusters — easy enough to put down. The fruit bits, particularly the coated raisins, were way too sweet and the sugary glaze on the nuts caused the taste and texture to be a bit off.
Containing only 1 gram of protein per serving (well, 2 per pouch ) and 14 grams of sugar (well, 28 per pouch ), this mix is probably less suited for breakfast than it is for a snack or dessert. Slim Pickings is a weekly review of light foods. E-mail jchristman@arkansasonline. com
